I wouldn't worry about it. The search presentation looks like every one else's, and unless Google takes the time to look at your codes, you should be fine. Plus, Google seems very lenient when it comes to minor revisions to their search code, i.e. you can change the default checked button, etc.

Some time back I wanted to make a small modification to my code.
Change from top picture (which is what google spits out in the set-up) to the bottom picture.

    They firmly stated NO!
Even slight modifications are against the TOS.

Unless you here from Google themselves, I wouldn't risk getting banned.

The most he'll get is a warning, and that'll never happen, because the presentation of the search box looks exactly like everyone else's. As I said, the only way you can tell that search box was altered is if you look at the source code, and Google isn't going to go around to every 50 billion website with their codes and check the source codes.

Google has allowed slight modifications that do not change the look of the search box, however they are still by permission only. I don't think you want to rack up a warning on your account over this. Just email them to ask permission.

You are still breaking the TOS. Even if the odds are 1/50 billion why risk it?

Just for arguements sake, let's say your site hits slashdot ordigg and that day your earnings go up 10 - 20x. This will raise flags and Google will check the site out and guess what, it breaks the TOS. You just never know.

I saw the search box and its code on ur website and looks good to me.
The TOS doesnt state anything about Search Box "code" modifications - Google is more concerned about the modification of the search results page that are displayed and dont want any adsense publisher modifying those results (framed etc) or showing their own ads when they reach the search page.

That's not the paid search box on my site as they wouldn't let me use the one in the bottom picture and the top picture looked terrible.

I sent google that picture asking if I could change the code to make it look like the bottom one and they said No.

    From AS:

Can I alter the AdSense for search code?

We understand that it's important for you to have control over the layout of your web pages, so we currently offer a number of display options for AdSense for search. Any changes to the code other than those available from your publisher account are not allowed.

Under the 'AdSense Setup' tab, when generating your AdSense for search code, you may choose to:

Open search results in a new window
Customize the length and layout of the Google search box
Select colors or styles for your AdSense for search results
Again, please note that modification of the AdSense for search code is a violation of the AdSense program policies. Publishers may not:

Pre-populate the AdSense for search box
Create links to Google AdSense for search results
Frame Google AdSense for search results
Remove or alter the Google logo

I found the response from Google:

    Hello Roman,

Thanks for your email regarding AdSense for search. At this time, there is
not currently an option to shorten the URL that appears for SiteSearch. As
such, we kindly ask that you do not modify the AdSense code. However,
please know that we're always working on new features for AdSense, and
your comments provide us with helpful feedback.

Also, we strongly recommend that you do not use the AdSense for search box
on your site to perform searches yourself. Besides increasing the risk of
accidental clicks on your own ads, searching through AdSense for search
will result in reports that don't properly reflect the traffic to your
    pages.

We suggest that you use Google.com for your searches, or, if you're a
Windows user running IE 5.0 or newer, we recommend the Google Toolbar. The
Toolbar allows you to search from within your browser, and includes
shortcuts to a number of Google services - more information is available
    at http://toolbar.google.com/ .

For additional questions, please visit our AdSense Support site at
https://www.google.com/support/adsense or feel free to reply to this
    email.

We'd also like to encourage you to let us know how we can improve our
customer support. Please take a few minutes to fill out our brief survey
    at http://www.insightexpress.com/s/Google.asp?uid=8&resetposition=true.

    Your input is greatly appreciated.

    Sincerely,

    Spencer
    The Google AdSense Team

I would like to ad a google adsense search to
    thelongestlistofthelongeststuffatthelongestdomainnameatlonglast .com, but
since the name is so long it looks very bad. I put up a picture of how it
    looks:

The top one is not modified code. I would like it to look like the bottom
one, but that means modifying 1 line of code wich is against the TOS.

    thelongestlistofthelongeststuffatthelongestdomainnameatlonglast
    .com

    TO:

    The Longest

Is there any way of achieving the desired result?

    Thanks
    Roman,

1 other question, can one test thier search out periodically as long as
they do not click on any paid links that show in results?

Send them the code and ask them for approval. I'd be paranoid too.
