DS is not prohibited according to Google because it is the quality that matters.

They won't penalize your site for directory submissions.

But directory submissions are not recommended anymore because they have no effect on SERP in Google.
What Google is saying here is: "Stop wasting your time with directory submissions. We don't count them."

Directory submissions might be counted by Yahoo or Live. I'm not sure about that.

I dont think its correct to penalize for any link, even in link farm, because you dont have control on all links. Everyone can link yo your site.

Well said, what's if any of our competitors add our site to hundreds of link farm sites, or even cheap directories. Rather than just stopping free link building methods. Google should rank the site according to quality of content, then it will be EMPIRE of SEs.

Does it mean ''only'' onpage optimization will decide how your site is going to rank in google??
It looks like google turns more to onpage than offpage seo.

To be fair, those statements looked a little too much anyway, I mean submit to yahoo directories ??? its not Google's business to make such suggestions.

No it is not unless you think directory submission == Link Building

"Backlinks from related sites" is not in the recommendation list either.

So I will ask once again: "Is linkbuilding death?"
Should we build backlinks from totally unrelated sites from now on?

Sorry to be persistent, I know it's doesn't make sense, but it comes from Google after all.

interesting. i've often seen directories as too easy to manipulate your way into better rankings. and if you had the money, then you could by the premium players like yahoo or dmoz.

Maybe G would suggest we pat the top of our heads 9 times and do three twirlies in a 2 foot diameter circle for promotion instead of directory submissions...
