Google No Longer Suggests Directory Submission.....???

Discussion in 'Google' started by seo2u, Oct 3, 2008.

While Google has condemned buying and selling links that pass PageRank, they’ve encouraged listing in paid directories like Yahoo for years. It seems that era may have come to an end earlier today. The following bullet points have been removed from "Google’s Webmaster Guidelines Webmaster Help Center*" http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=35769

    * “Have other relevant sites link to yours.”
    * “Submit your site to relevant directories such as the Open Directory Project and Yahoo!, as well as to other industry-specific expert sites.”

Does this recent move reflect a renewed emphasis on rooting out paid links passing PageRank and/or low quality links by Google?

They don't want people manipulating the SERPs at all. I'm sure they recommend submission to quality directories for marketing, but not for SEO.

Lets face it there have been tons of shitty directories out there that are spam directories... think G is just saying that you need to focus on relevant, active directories instead of the junk. One good link is worth 1000 crap directory links

Yahoo directory is not a paid directory. You can pay so that your site is reviewed within 7 days but it is not guaranteed that your site will get listed.

But yeah, google has removed the two lines you mentioned.

Argh, my eyes! I had to plug in two extra monitors on top of my own to read the large font. WTF?!!!

I think Google is on a crusade to stamp out links that aren't genuine - link trades, link purchases, 3 way links - in fact any kind of link that a webmaster would initiate.

Perhaps they want the only links that go to any sites be the links that appear in their index. Classic step number 6 in "The 8 Steps to Ruling the World" :)
