My ranking on Google for a specific keyword has been jumping around significantly as of lately. It is very odd. One hour it's on the 7th-5th page and then I check a few hours later i'm on the 1st page in the fourth postion down from the top. It does this daily and i'm not sure why i'm jumping around so much. Can someone please help me? I recently hired an SEO company.

Sometimes it depends on the google database center. Different database center gives you different ranking result.

In my case, one of my sites keep jumping between PR6 and Pr4.

I hope it sticks with the latter. ;)

It happens to me too. I have one site that was on page 1 and then dropped to page 60+ !! It has been doing this for a while now. It will go up within a week or 2 and then dropped. But everytime it goes up, it will reach higher position than the previous highest position. The highest it went was 8th. Sigh. Don't know when it will stabilize.

It is common for keyword rankings to jump around. I have a competitive keyword that ranked in Google's top five for quite a good while. Then it dropped drastically, eventually even out of the top 100. The other day it came back to #3, hung there a short while, then dropped to #27 today.

I've made no changes to the page featuring this keyword in that entire time frame. I mentioned all that to say: this is a regular occurrence in Google rankings. KWs can and do jump all over the place. Relax and let them find their equilibrium.

It's pretty common. Especially when someone is working hard on getting backlinks and do onpage optimization as in your case.

Hi Jim, as per your study we must say google may have 3-4 or even more ranking formulas and they are beign used to search best site for appropriate keywords.

As per my study I had seen top 3 sites having very constant ranking for highly compitative keywords.
    E.g. Web hosting.
I am tracking this keyword on regular basis and finding very few here and there on top. Ranking from 3 to rest are varying.

    It's a Google Dance.

Google Dance - The name given to the period when Google updates its search engine rankings. Google's main and secondary server results will be different during this time.

    How old is your site?

In order to get a stable position in search results, build lots of backlinks.

My site has also had the same problems, one minute #3 in google the next no where to be found, very odd, but as everyone has said google is updating so this is what is causing the problems. Although the update should be over now i would give it at least a week and hopefully things would have settled down by then. :D
