I started a few months ago learning google maps api (e.g PictouCounty.net) and then the projects got put a side for a while, now they are using version 2 and some stuff has changed and I am findiing myself learning again. Anyways somebody told me that yahoo has a maps api as well and I was wondeing if anybody knew anything about it. maybe i should be learning that one indstead. Which do you think is better?
I prefer google maps api.... easier to set-up thought, but it will depend what programming knowledge you may have
I used google maps on http://www.usachurchguide.com and it seemed pretty easy to integrate. Yahoo! I didn't care for, I guess it is just a matter or personal preference.
definetly, google maps api is the best. I'm using it on my website and it was very easy to implement, probably knowing java was an advantage, all you need is to read examples and copy what you are interested in, and maybe changing some variables values.
Actually I beleive Yahoo maps is better. Googles map is lacking landmarkings unless you pay.. where as Yahoos is all free. Do a google search for 'yahoo vs google maps' and you will see what a lot of people thing .. and I think Yahoo is best (for the FREE versions). Personally I like the google maps better .. but those landmarks are key in my applications so i have no choice.
I like Google maps. Switching everything over to V2 was a bit difficult, which I would characterize as lots of experimenting. I recommend doing changes in small increments where possible.
I would have to agree, I started with v1 and then some of my code would not work in v2, thus I was wondering if maybe larning yahoo would be better then trying to learn the new v2 stuff and why some of my old code didnt work. great comments!
But if you look closely Google maps (standard) is missing a lot of stuff on the map .. where Yahoo maps has everything there (namely well known landmarks) .. also I beleive Yahoo maps has built in address to geocoding. If you dont need some of these things .. I too would preffer Google maps.
The problem is the Yahoo terms and conditions forbid you to use the API on a site that generates income !? Unless you get their permission (which means build it and then they may or may not approve your "application"). I believe several of the Yahoo APIs have similiar restrictions.
I think its more like you just cant charge people to use the Map? .. or somehow make money from people using the map (pay per search) or something .. Every website is out to make some type of profit .. I dont see how that would work out.
