I thought i wouldn't be saying this, but Google for the first time in a long time has lost search engine market share by a little more then 1%. The interesting news is that Yahoo gained search engine market share. Could this spell trouble for Google? There is also some articles about this, Here is one.

I can see why people search from Google since google is now a verb, but why would people search from Yahoo!. I use my.yahoo.com everyday but when I search I google. I suppose some people have cobranded home pages with their ISP like Yahoo DSL. But what other factors get people to yahoo (verb) instead of google?

I'll wait to be surprised until this happens a second or third time. Google can't always be on the rise forever and Yahoo has stuck in there fairly well compaired to some of the others. So, I'll wait to gasp.

I really hope Yahoo gains more market share, so there can be a more even market. In other words if something happens to your rankings in Google, you still can survive with the Yahoo traffic.

I don't know what everyone else thinks but Google probably have found that a bit of the exodus is due to their recent problems with their SERPs over the last few months, I would be surprised if this decline didn't continue for at least another month or two. I know I personally have moved away from Google from time to time because the Google results are spitting out garbage.

I'd like to see MSN start gaining some ground. I don't like yahoo's engine at all.

When I want to search for something progmatic/dev/design I always reach for google. If it has to do with buying something, I turn to MSN. Yahoo just doesn't seem to give me the results i'd prefer to see when doing either of the above.

Yup, 1% isnt much (or is it.. we're talking billions here..) but you must remember the amount of overall searches has vastly increased as well.

Yes 1% is a lot when you talk about search market share. Also that 1% can be very bad news for them because that could be a sign of them loosing popularity. So next month if they loose 2% then Google should be worried, at least i would be.

If google continues to lose market share in one percent increments than it could be a big problem, but small fluctuations in popularity are to be expected.

Yahoo is a more stable engine. Google becomes stagnant after updates. MSN is unpredictable.
So if yahoo gains, it will be better.

I use both, usually google first and then yahoo if I don't find what I'm looking for on google. While google maybe the leader in search now, the field is still wide open for others to take the lead. It wasn't too long ago that AOL used to be the leader in search

Yahoo will lose market share and Google will gain market share when they start serving MySpace.

Yahoo were the search providers and lost that contract so it will reverse their gains ... as MySpace is picking up a fraction of market share that will shift to Google in October.

Yahoo is the biggest thing in China, they use it instea dof Google for searches, they use it for News instead of (insert popular western news site here) they use it instead of eBay for auctions (just take a look at Yahoo auctions KH or china compared to eBay HK or china) and stuff like this.

Yahoo is very big in China/HongKong.

But yeah I hate Yahoo, Google all the way =D

seems like google gets 30% of the searches in china.. i do know that yahoo is #1 in Japan.

Baidu (china local SE) still gets a large amount of the searches in china though, its still number one. Last time i checked google was after.

Perhaps then Yahoo can offset their lost market share of MySpace users by gaining market share in China/Hong Kong.

I expect China to have more long term search market share than MySpace would be able to maintain.

i'm sure that the error margin of the data collection and calculation methodology is larger than 1%... so the change of 1% can be attributed to the process rather than the real thing... ;)

Yahoo deserves a higher or equal market share than google, as they have never lost their pace unlike msn from the past few months (grr.. my listings drop from msn)

A 1% decline in share may not seem to be much, but remember - Google has no way to go but down. They can only saturate the market so much. If this is the beginning of a trend (and it isn't a trend yet - we shall see), then it is a dangerous trend.
