Google Link: domain name inconsistencies

    Hi All

    I have the domain - www.brilliantprints.com.au

When I do a "link:www.brilliantprints.com.au" I get 62 backward links. When I do "link: www.brilliantprints.com.au" I get 334 backward links. How can that tiny little space between the colon and www. change the number of backward links shown?

    Kind regards

By entering the space you are now doing an actual search for the term "link: anything"

You are no longer asking Google to perform a function

The results you are seeing are just the SERPs for that Keyword Phrase

Thanks for the reply. The problem is that I have been exchanging links with a few people. The backwards links with the space has been going up, the backward links without the space has remained the same. If I have a page linking to me, then should the backward links without the space go up ?

    Thanks again

    Liam

Google doesn't show the majority of links, and they only update it every month or two. It used to be that google only showed links from pages with a PR4 or greater (they have since changed this) but what you are experiencing is quite common. I have a site which yahoo shows as having over a 1,000 backlinks, but google shows a little less than a 100.

Google has been very inconsistent with displaying backlinks for some time now. Yahoo shows much more accurate results. To search for backlinks on Yahoo, use the linkdomain:domain.com command.

Or use MSN as it seems to cache new links the quickest. MSN uses "link:" command the same way as Google does. I use http://www.alltheweb.com which is a bit slower in caching links but is very consistent in the links it reports and imo gives the best indication of how well you are doing.

I don't think that's true. What they don't do is report what they're doing very quickly, but that's not inefficiency -- that's by design.

And I think that is still the ugliest sig in this forum, city2.

It is very important to note that Yahoo's Linkdomain: and Google's Link: search are NOT the same!!!!

Google's Link: search ONLY returns links to a particular page.
ie. Link:www.yoursite.tld returns only reported links to the main page of your site.

Yahoo's Linkdomain: search returns ALL of the links reported for every page on your entire site.

I have found that having Google alerts notify me of updates to link:www domain.tld and a search for a company name or unique keyword (Put it in the link description and meta description, and maybe the page title for best effect) notifies me of most of what they have recently found.

I also use that strategy, NetMidWest... it's a nice and underutilized Google feature.

    Hi Liam

I am doing some optimisation for the domain - www.cahootsphotos.com.au
I notice that you are doing very well in Google. You seem to be ranking very high. Any tips to get a similar type of business to a similar position. Maybe we could exchange links.
