Hey guys, New to digitalpoint, so thanks for having me and all that. Just a quick question to start with... why when use Google link:www. etc do I get a different number of links than WMT? Usually it's a lot less, and as a client knows this way of checking progress, it doesn't look too good... Cheers
The link: command on G will only show a very small sampling of the actual links. Yahoo is far better.
using the link: command, Google shows random links so it's useless if you want to see the progress.. You can get more results by using Google Webmaster Tools
The link: operator shows you the number of high quality links (traditionally links from pages with a PageRank score of 4 or higher) that point to the URL in question. The pages shown in the results are not likely to be the sources of those high quality links. You can get a more comprehensive list of the links that Google has seen by using the Webmaster Tools console.
They screwed up their own backlinks tool so that webmasters could not achieve higher rankings than their competition.
From my experience, I could notice increase in my SE rankings, when the number of links shown in google Link: command increased. I think it consideres only important links to list there
