I don't think the goal is to actually "compete" with Google. Even with inexhaustible capital(eg., Microsoft w/ Live) it would be virtually impossible to knock out Google from the top spot. I think to even receive .5% market share would be a profitable endeavor. -In 2007 an estimated 70 billion search queries were made in North America. -With an 1% CTR that's 700 million clicks. -Lets say you have .5% market share, that's roughly 3.5 million clicks at $2.50 a click that's around $9 million in total revenue. That's only in North America, I think there is more opportunity in emerging markets as the curve of technology catches up in countries in Africa where Google doesn't have a market penetration and brand recognition. but anywayz just an idea.
I wonder how you can explain the fact that when NewsCorp bought it last year they paid $560 million and that was not paid to a big corperation...
I have been working on my own google killer http://www.vmgo.com/ for about a year now and it is ready to come out of beta. If you want to promote a new engine I could sure use some help.
google is already to big it as to much power over the new internet business, we really have to be carefull, also I read almost every month about there privacy policy, wich is almost not there.
no one can kill google other than google itself .... by monopolizing the market and then there will be government intervention putting laws and fining google. thats the only way they can kill google .. but google won't die entirely .. it'll just slow down
If and when Google dies it ought to be one heckava funeral ..don't you think? Very interesting to see the opinion and knowledge of so many webmasters. Thanks.
Sites like blackle that are getting "political" or relevant to today are doing well in the search engine world. I'm sure someone will trump google sooner or later!
I sense a serious bias on this forum for Google. And just for that I cannot wait the day Google starts loosing sharepoints becuase it will teach the wannabe webmasters here that nothing in the internet domain is unbeatable. Anyways that day is already here.....Google stock prices have dropped $45.00.
Ever hear the expression -- "The gods grant 40 years of success to those they wish to destroy"? Google will begin the decline on the days it becomes complacent.
Google isn't just a search engine. They are where they are because of innovation. They seem to be light years ahead of everyone else. All other companies, including Microsoft, seem to be stuck with copying the tools that they devise first. A company that is going to beat them has to think even further ahead. Think-- not just "how can we make a better search engine?" but, "what incentives can we offer to get people to increase their advertising with us?"
