The Approx Avg Search Volume is this monthly?

And if so, why does the Approx Search Volume: October often display "Not enough data"?

For instance the search volume shows thousands of searches, but October shows "Not enough data"

    Thanks

    Approx Avg Search Volume
    Approx Search Volume: October
As for the "Not enough data" it's just their way of saying that they might not have all the search history from all the data centers yet, or simply there were not enough searches that month to give an approximate.

They need certain amount of data from certain search engine but they not yet receive/detect. It might need tke some time to get the data. However, the result wouldnt run much for the general kewyord

BTW, Google keyword tool's estimates are sometimes way off and unreliable.

Yes, it is monthly searches. As far as reasons why, aside from the possibility of a technical glitch, the biggest reason is seasonality of keywords. The "approx avg search volume" is the average over a 12 month time-frame and so the highs and lows equal out, whereas last month could've been a "low" month for that keyword phrase.

I have found this to be very true as well. After ranking decently for some keyword phrases supposedly being high traffic, I ran PPC for exact matches and didn't see nearly the impressions that would indicate high search. And I typically stay in the top 4 for ad placement.

they're not estimates, they're summary calculations based on the data they have on the millions of keywords people are typing in every second. Because the calculation is an average, it's not exactly spot on, but it's a good indicator.
