Google Keyword Question...?

I have a question about keywords and google. Now lets say my sports website (example) is Sports360.com or Sportsonspot.com or something like that.

Now lets also say that I have tons of backlinks, now if I have tons of backlinks how does google know what to keyword you as, like how doest google know that your site comes up when people type in sports shoes or sport equip on google.

I do know that backlinks is how to get your rank higher and higher in google towards the first page. But how do you pick your keywords so when people search sports your site will be up? do you put it in keywords meta tag or something?

    Thanks
    Marc

Meta tags and keywords. Some say no need for them but i always use them.

Search for keywords that fit the site and use some in your links to the site.

Take note that Google uses latent semantic indexing.
For example, if you want your site to be up for the terms "sports shoes", you have to have anchor link with related terms on "sport shoes" linking to your site. Meaning that if your anchor text coming into your site is just "sports shoes", then Google will treat the links as manipulative. Then your site will not even rank at all regardless of the number of backlinks you have.

as said above, meta tags and properly researched keywords. A lot of people say that meta tags really don't have any bearing on rankings, but IMO they do.

There are some tools that you can use to find keywords (ie: http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/suggestion/ )
