my site is #4 on yahoo and msn but #195 on google why soo bad on google? sorry i am a young beginner but am intersted and dedicated in making my site come up high
Ahhh....there is soooo much to learn and too much for a simple answer. However first you should understand that yahoo and msn use the Inktomi Search Engine so they will be the same...ish. Next go and look at the MSN to be http://techpreview.search.msn.com/ and see if you are different - you should be as you are with Google - all different Search Engines. Now what you have to do is read the forum and ask questions - there are many very good threads that will start you off. Use the Search facility.
For me, 95% of my SE traffic come from google. No idea why nothing seems to come in for the rest. Inktomi Slurp has been spidering heavily lately though. Hope it will bring in some more traffic.
For a good ranking on google you need links to other site (and the other sites has to link back) to get a high ranking, MSN and Yahoo uses different index methods
Apart from the differences in how one search ranks pages versus how others do it, another reason you may not rank as well in Google is because Google has more pages in its index than any others -- you could be competing with, for example, 4000 other pages in the Google index vs. only 400 in Yahoo (no flames please: this is a totally hypothetical example).
Very generally speaking, the more relevant results a search engine is able to return, the harder it will be to artificially manipulate rankings.
Is there a tool that would tell you how many relevant links you would need to rank well in google? I've been #6 in yahoo for nearly a month but #108 in google. Thanks, Joe
No. There are tools which will tell you (theoretically and sometimes hypothetically) how many links you will need to achieve a certain PageRank but that only addresses one of many factors. Ranking well in Google is partly a function of backlinks but there are several other determinants as well.
There are thousands of individual variables and to make it even more difficult, those variables are dependent on each other. Pretty much making it impossible to create a system to get good rankings that can be universally applied to any site. As an example, links and content are always important, but how important varies from site to site.
I think yahoo/msn likes (or you could say "lets you get away with") a higher keyword density than google does
Ranking for Google is generally considered much more difficult. A few of the reasons that are most commonly sited is that Google's algorithm is much more resistant to common SEO techniques and Google also has a much larger cache of sites than Yahoo!/MSN/Inktomi. The MSN Techpreview is looking very promising though. Their index is enormous and their results are pretty good. I'm going to try to do some impartial testing for search terms to see who's coming out ahead. As for links, content, etc. - Google does seem to like deep-linking, fresh content & older sites more than Yahoo!, while Yahoo! has a preference for top level domains and sites that are all about the search query (rather than pages from big sites like Google).
Are you serious? While I personally like the tech preview results (because I rank #1 for everything), I wouldn't exactly call it a good search engine, as it's easy to manipulate the rankings. Any results that SEOs generally like is most likely not a very good search engine as far as relevance goes. But hey, I would like everyone in the world to start using it of course.
I dont know about your industry Shawn, but in mine the new MSN is more relevant then google. Also the page count is higher in MSN than google as well for our # 1 search phrase. What I have notice in the new MSN verses Google is that most of the top 10 sites in google that have several doorway pages are not ranked in the top 10 in the new MSN. I have also seen a correlation between the age of the website and ranking in my industry here in Las Vegas. There seem to be younger sites with more backlinks and better on page seo then some of the top 10 sites on google, but because the age of these websites are newer, they are ranked further down the serps.
Not talking about a specific industry. Just that for normal search engine usage I use Google because it gives me more relevant results than other search engines with normal usage.
What industry and is the same site you referred to listed 1,2,3 as the same URL? Plus is it your main search phrase?
#1 is their old site and it redirects to their new one #2 is theirsite.com #3 is theirsite.com/home #4 is ME YES this is my main search phrase thank you
