Google has been leaning toward this for years. I was surprised to see how quickly they switched to it. What I find disturbing is the loss of discovery. When results are being catered to the users search behavior, showing the user what the user already knows. I will opt-out of filtering, but will use other SE's now more often.

mo money mo money mo money...

They have no problem taking from anyone.....
2005 - 2006 they went after blog links or (bloggers) mom & pops
2007 - 2009 major directories penalized for no good reason (paid link ruse)
2010 - 2011 (SEOs) will lose due to declining options other then...Adwords

Take from everyone and force All to use adwords to promote online
(your new small site will never be seen or found without using - Adwords)

So..who or whats next? All small, medium, large sized businesses on the internet? ...

Some are just to ignorant to ever understand what privacy / freedom and all that good stuff is about,...
especially if they are not from the USA as they never invested into it to care and cherish it ;)

I have also opted out, but in the end it really doesnt mean anything anymore as your being continuously
tracked & targeted if you use search regardless of any attempt not too be :(

PS... Dont think MSN isnt doing the same now via there ads and privacy

The only people this will "screw" are the people with crappy websites. Keep your sites interesting and updated with great content and the personal results people will want to see will be YOURS. I'm not worried about this....

Made for Adsense (MFA) sites should be worried about this.

If you are confident that your site is really good then this will be good news for revenue

ok, so when can we expect this personalized search results?

btw, if we do our seo and our site reaches top10 but someone
doesnt like it and thus doesnt visit it anymore, do you think
our site has deserved it to stay in the top10 for this one person?

If you use any Google app, you're already seeing the effects.

Try logging into gmail, and searching for something you are familiar with. Then log out of gmail and do the same search, and you'll see the SERP is very different.

They are using collaborative filters to try to give you better search results. That means if they know you're looking for a certain type of website, they will give those types of websites more weight than others.

Why is lots of content preferable to a "made for adwords" site as some have said?

What is the benefit of having a content rich site in the new personalized world?

I feel really sorry for all the crap sites out there (not!), actually I get sick to my stomach from some of the sites I see out there that are ranking. This is a way to filter them out for the user.

High Bounce Rate = no google love.

well, if things go like this, the info people want to get will be limited. we must admit the first web we click sometimes not the perfect web we really want, so limit the range people can search, personally i think, is not a smart idea.
