Please read my last comment on that topic on webmasterworld:)

P.S. Don't believe anything you read on the internet:) When Google will write on their site "We completely devalue reciprocal links and give them 0 weight" then it's true. Anything other is complete unproven BS.

The belief that one-way links have more value has been around for several years. 4 or 5 years ago, people started noticing that link exchanges were less effective than one-way inbound links.

Check this out: Matt Cutts: Gadgets, Google, and SEO » Indexing timeline

    Quotes:

"After looking at the example sites, I could tell the issue in a few minutes. The sites that fit “no pages in Bigdaddy” criteria were sites where our algorithms had very low trust in the inlinks or the outlinks of that site. Examples that might cause that include excessive reciprocal links, linking to spammy neighborhoods on the web, or link buying/selling."

"if you were getting crawled more before and you’re trading a bunch of reciprocal links, don’t be surprised if the new crawler has different crawl priorities and doesn’t crawl as much."

"Some folks that were doing a lot of reciprocal links might see less crawling."

This doesn't address the zero value issue, but it does indicate that excessive reciprocal linking can have negative consequences.

Giving 0 weighing to reciprocal links would be illogical. Not all reciprocal links are there for SEO, a handful of webmasters still exchange links because both websites have something of value to their visitors. By assigning 0 weighting Google would discourage this. Not to mention that discouraging links goes against the very nature of the Internet of being a “web” (interlinked).

Tech Evangelist, I get sites (competetive in jewelry industry) in top 10 just via link exchanges 2 and 3 years ago. Just by that.

Also I am going to ask how average Joe with his small e-commerce shop need to obtain links ? Doing good content will not get them far. Also Google probably can't track paid links. Who knows, maybe person like my site about tea cups for example and give me link for free:)

Reciprocal linking was here long time ago before Google and his updates.

Matt just spread the word around of course. Well already said that on WMW:)
