Google is under no legal contract for serp placement. They are free to "Update" their algoritim anytime they feel neccessary.
To purposely manipulate google.com results to increase adwords, if proven, would be a PR nightmare at best.

Here are links to threads starting with Nov. 5, 2003 Note: The infamous "Florida Update" started in Nov. 2003 Forum threads Regarding Google Updates Nov. 2003 note this thread... Google: Out to crush Mom and Pop November 29th, 2003 Caryl
Thanks for all the links Caryl and I will look at them all. What were the outcomes of the other updates in your experience after December? Things worse, equal or better than the Fall Update Fiascos of the past?
The Nov. 2003 "Florida Update" marked a significant change in Googles algorithim. It marked the time when Google switched their priorities from on-page optimization to Linking! Prior to Nov 2003 you could rank quite well with very few backlinks. Those sites that placed well due primarily to on-page optimization saw Little to NO RECOVERY until they began linking campaigns. Successive Google Updates focused primarily on altering the values of certain links. I found, personally, that many of the shake ups ended with many sites returning to similar positions they held prior to the "shake up". BUT A great many folks did NOT wait out the Event and started making frantic changes - who knows where they would have ended up IF they just waited. IMPORTANT: Most of the previous years threads petered out, splintered off, etc. which makes it extremely difficult to research the overall outcomes of the previous Events. This is why I have tried so hard to keep links to current threads and to maintain some sort of dialog that will indicate that this is a continuing Google Event that has NOT reached a conclusion yet. My hope is that we can eventually create a thread that folks will report their experiences and outcomes. If we can do this - it will be THE FIRST. Caryl
Thanks Caryl - I know that's what you're trying to do so that is why I have been asking you via this thread. And I am on board to help contribute to this till it actually ENDS!
Shoemoney how do manage to create a google sitemap for 300K plus pages? I've got a 100K + plus site and can't get any of the programs out there to create my sitemap before they crap out?!?!?! Please let me know! Frank
Try http://enarion.net/google/phpsitemapng/ Works fine for me on 250K pages. Do not try the demo crawl on the site since you have to change a few settings first for so many pages.
Shouldn't crawl your site at all! At 300k pages then they're in a database right? So you query the database and output from that. Can be done in a flash. For an example check out this code for vBulletin: http://forum.time2dine.co.nz/seo-vbulletin/vbulletin-google-site-map-3976.html
Caryl, I started to level out a bit and now even though I have more of my keywords listed again, they are now swinging up and down AGAIN by almost 10,000 places. It is getting old. Won't post more comments due to some responses, but that is it in a nutshell. Carol
noniman and srahk - thanks for your feedback. Its an asp site will investigate both your suggestions. thanks Frank
Barre Tire, Am not sure how the post on using questionable tactics, link buying or paid banners etc. applies as I don't do any of these. Are you seeing something on my site you think fits in that? Or did I miss what I was supposed to see there? Thanks, Carol
Just this morning a normal search with Google was bringing up the new datacenter results (64.233.179.99), now it's back to normal again...
Hello Carol, When you say "swinging up and down" are you seeing large differences across the datacenters using a tool or are you just seeing different results when searching on www.google.com? For anyone who is NOT aware of this... There is no "regular" Google. When you do a search on www.google.com you are routed to one of the Datacenters. You can tell which Datacenter you have been routed to by passing your mouse cursor over any of the Cached links on the results page. When you pass your mouse over the link - look down at the bottom left hand corner of your browser window - in the "status" bar, and you will see a url that starts out like - "http://216.239.57.98/..." that is the IP of the Datacenter you were routed to. I have been witnessing huge swings across the Datacenters on a daily basis. I expect it will continue at least until ~Dec 20th. I also think that this kind of movement is much more noticable when your position is farther down in the serps. ...kind of like a tree swaying in the wind... Caryl
