Actually Google is on the way to becoming the world leading IT company. After purchasing Android and merging it with Chrome development department they have a ton of material, a huge number of skilled OS developers and nearly unlinited finances to throw at achieving some goal. What this goal will be? It is now being widely discussed, but only opinions and rumors circulate, as no official statements were made, as far as I know. However, after implementing Google Public DNS system they actually became the most potent and prominent domain operator worldwide. This service is not yet overpraised but numbers of domain owners willing to manage their domains via Google grow exponentially.

Maybe G will create an online OS, a hybrid of Android and Chrome, loading to any compatible device via browser? Maybe they will implement one into another or combine these to form something absolutely unexpected - and irresistible for users. Future will show, but google is definitely already an overpowered player on the market, an elefant among cattle. We collaborate and cooperate for now, but no one knows what tomorrow will bring.

I think Annea is right, only following the same strategy worldwide we can become partners with Google, not its subordinates. It is a tool, a powerful, convenient and versatile... but by far not the only one and not perfect, in my opinion.

"G only has tremendous power over us if we let it. I think that if we can devise a solid plan and use G as a tool instead of the only tool to help our income grow, we will be much further ahead. That would give us independent stability."

Google became a target of whining and complaining of all youtubers after implementing their new comment system. And what? Did they care? Nope. A big, fat nope. They just did what they wanted and we had to accept it. More changes are to be done in the future and we cannot do anything about it, we will have to accept it. Google just does what they want, that's all.

Let's not forget about the 8 robotics companies that they've recently purchased. I've no doubt that they have big (enormous!) plans and they probably don't include me or my little corner of the internet. I don't know if they will do evil things but honestly, I don't trust them much anymore and I don't like them knowing so much about me. It's starting to feel a bit too "Big Brother" for my liking. Not trying to be paranoid but it kinda gives me the creeps.

Wow when you think about Google does kinda have a monopoly over all other search engine companies.

But we have the power to change that simply by using other search engines to do business with. I suggest expanding our business horizons and use some of the others for our monetizing, in addition to G. The worst that could happen is we make some extra money, plus when Google decides to slam the door in our faces (if it does), we are already established elsewhere.

I dunno, maybe that's a crazy idea but seems like a good one to me.

Actually I ask myself sometimes - does anybody in the world use anything but Google search engine? "To google" became a verb already and this verb means "to search with guaranteed success". I did not ever hear a person saying "to bing" or "to yahoo".

All other search engines are dead already, imho. Unfortunately(

You have to remember that Google doesn't owe anything to us. I can't think of a more ethical company than Google in the business that it operates. While they do hold a lot of power in the search world - around the world - there is a a good reason for this. This is because people like the results they are seeing and they like the direction that Google is going in to make search easier for those looking for things.

You have also have to remember that Google are not working to improve the search engines for webmasters, but for people who are using their service to search for things and go give them relevant results. I'm sure if webmasters had it their own way, Google wouldn't even have the market share that it has today.

I do not even dare to think Google owes anything to me. They do a decent job, they are the leaders of the market and we all are more than pleased with the results they provide. However, monopoly is not good and Big Brother Google watching over me is not my dream.

This post makes it seem like Google's goal is to make money regardless of who gets in the way and I disagree with that. Google is becoming powerful and this is bound to scare people but I think Google has made it pretty clear through its actions that it seeks to bring internet freedom with a focus solely on making the best search engine possible and pushing to give everyone access to it.

At this time, I would rather Google have the power they have than any other company. Microsoft has proven itself time and time again that it seeks to make money as its purpose regardless of how it has to use its influence to pressure buyers and keep a hold in the consumers pocket. Of course I would rather no one have so much power as Google but they are better than any alternative.

Google has a market share like internet explorer had in early 2000s. Or altavista :p So basically things can change but google has resources and money to prepare and become skynet with androids

More and more people are using and sticking to Google as their search engine because of faster, reliable skills and service to its users.

Google is playing big, with these latest algorithm changing search results, no more place for amateurs by de-indexing and outranking small website and giving the full place to big player in the industry! Google knows they are dominating the search results and want to take advantage of that to make the most of it!

the exclusive possession or control of the supply or trade in a commodity or service.

It's indeed becoming too powerful, but what can we do about it? It's still the best search enginge, and if that doesn't change then i don't see google losing their power.

Some solutions were offered here. WHy not trying to use another search engines while these are not completely dead?
Lots of people still use aol, yahoo, bing and even rambler or yandex worldwide. Promoting your content on these engines in addition to Google will definitely do you no harm. Google is as powerful as we let it to be.

Although the conditions are like that, we have to keep working on making our website remain in optimum position.
