Before making this libelous statement, check each of those?
What proof do you offer that there were not 36m results?

Have to remember, results are tons of sites that may have nothing to do with the keyword entered.

Am sure google would love to talk to you about calling them liars.

Google doesn't always show all results (it eliminates duplicates). I have on occassion seen it say that there are more results than there really are myself, (in very specific quieries).

"In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the (# of results here) already displayed. If you like, you can repeat the search with the omitted results included."

On this site:search, however, my results showed that there were 36,600 pages, when in fact there were only 5 serps for the site. The blurb / link above about showing omitted results is NOT present.

    This is strange indeed.

Why are you so worried? With those stats it's normal to get the kind of results you said.

What is the problem here? am I missing something? This is a forum, if you use session ids, then it is possible the same pages will be indexed multiple times in theory giving you infinite pages (only to be filtered out as duplicates at various datacantres.

Everyone knows that you can not rely on ANYTHING webmasters use on google site: inurl: link: etc Google is just screwing with SEO's. It's all part of the game ;)

Seriously doubt that's a libelous statement... lol.

Secondly, he said he ran "site:" ... which should only return pages from his site. It was 36,600 results, not 36 million. In this case, the results SHOULD have everything to do with the keywords entered. I've read a lot of posts where this is happening. I think he is correct, I think "site:" is broken.

    --EDIT--

Old Welsh Guy makes a good point, indeed google is not smart enough to see SIDs on forums. Why, I have no idea... I've seen google hit the same page 10,000+ times in a row, with a diff session ID each time. Ridiculous, IMO, for the "best SE" to be doing this.
