I learned about cloaking when I started learning SEO. I never really pursued it, but now I'm going to try it.

What my question is, when google comes by, do they have one unique IP quailty? For instance will it be

    64.235.632.734 or
    64.235.623.*** or
    64.235.***.***

What do you guys use when you do it?
    Thanx

cloaking is stupid, google did the smart move to spread their toolbar, so think that basically they can come from any ip now since as soon as someone with toolbar visits your page you're caught

Cloaking is a bad idea and is a fast way of getting banned, imo.

Cloaking is completely not worth it. Ethical SEO practices are not that difficult to be perfectly honest and they work very well.

I have not had a single need to cloak or cheat. If you want spammy fast results just exploit MSN search. Its rediculously easy to get a sites ranked for nearly any keyword within 5 days or less with simple link spamming.

And yea, as soon as someone visits your site with their toolbar pagerank settings activated, you are done.

usually just detecting the refer is the best way to cloak. I dont know of any major website that does NOT use some form of cloaking. (altering the page based on who is asking for it)

Cloaking?!?!? You naughty, naughty boy. Immoral bastards like you are NOT welcome at DP! Please try one of our sister sites like: www.dpwhitehatsdrovemehere.com or www.dpsaysimevil.com

Oh, and BTW, the answer to your question can be found here:
    http://www.ihategoogle.org/?sectionid=6

In the future you might get a warmer reception for these types of topics at places like http://www.syndk8.net/

But, personally, I like seeing them here ... all knowledge is good knowledge in my book. :)

Good luck... with whatever you're not really doing ;)

BTW you seem really knowledgeable about this field, and that suit looks like it was bought with adsense. Now im thinking that cloaking, is the way to go.

Heh, don't read to much into my post. I've done a lot with cloaking because I wanted to see what's possible. Probably the only nasty trick out there that I haven't tried is blog spam and email spam.

I make a great living from adsense and I'm a big believer of "don't shit where you eat .. unless you have no choice". ;) I actually haven't made any money from blackhat because I never put revenue generating links (adsense or affiliates) on my blackhat sites. I play with all the stuff just because I'm curious to see how much traffic and how quickly blackhat sites can generate. If all my other sites crash and burn one day I'm not above doing whatever it might take short-term to pay the bills, but (knock on wood) that has never happened.

If you're going to start mucking with it and discussing it on boards like DP, then use the term "IP Delivery" ... much more politically correct and IMHO all worthwhile cloaking schemes are IP based so it means the same thing.

Also, to the original question, googlebot uses a number of different IPs so that's going to be a very clumsy way of identifying the spider.

Clumsy, eh? IP based cloaking is the only way to go if you're trying to do something nefarious and not get caught. Any schmuck can come along and change their user-agent to take a look at how search engines see your page if you do it based on useragent which is the clumsy way if you're trying to be a blackhat.

If you say so - I don't use tricks. But I warn you, there are a lot of IPs you're going to have to include to get ALL of those Googlebots.

If you block all the 64.*** ip's, you still will not have blocked all of the ones Google uses. They use not only that range but other IP ranges as well.
