i just submitied my sitemap to google through google webmaster tools, and my sitemap status is listed as "ok" and shows url's submited as "34"

but when i check my indexed stats, it shows that google has only indexed 10 of my pages.

does this just take several days, or is there a problem on my end somewhere?

    thank you

nothing is immediate, especially with google....I would wait a day or two and see what you have...

It takes google some time to go through a new site even if you have submitted the sitemaps.

Be patient, Google is actually busy with a PR update, which might slow dow other tasks. Anyway they sometimes need up to a month to index all your pages. Generally it helps to add a new page to your site, add the URL to your submitted sitemap and resubmit the sitemap again using webmaster tools. You should not resubmit the sitemap without a new page added.;)

Get a link on a website with good pr or place the link to your site in your signature at DP, this will help index your site faster.

Sometimes it takes a week or two for google to change the whole index.
I changed my permalink structure since last week and now Google still has two types my permalink structure on its index. Hopefully those old permalink structure will be cleared up within this month.

And that's where the 301 redirect comes in to play :)

Quite true, any time you change the domain or a file name/extension use 301 redirect to direct users as well as search engine bots to the new page/site.

It could also be due to the fact they just updated PR and sometimes in the past they have shut down site indexs while they do that. I know mine which is indexed every 5 days was not indexed for 2 weeks during that time period!

you have to wait google to index all of your site . the time for indexing depents on your backlinks, if you have strong backlinks , time will decrease

index stats go up an down - it can go way down or way low - two months ago my forum had 3k pages indexed, then a month ago i saw just about 50 links indexed, i was mad lol but it goes up and down - now its like 6k lol. U dont have to submit sitemaps for them to index. but it just helps them out to index faster i guess.

I don't know if this will help you.
I delete my robots.txt from my server and after that from 22 pages index to almost 8500 within a week Zero advertising..... I think that you can protect a directory with a password in your cpanel.
The only reason that webmasters use robots.txt is to tell spiders what not to crawl in a website that is it.
I am not a webmaster, but I play around with different things.
    Good luck.

A sitemap only tells Google those pages exist, it doesn't mean they are going to act on that information.
