It usually takes around 5min for one of my sites to appear in Google.

If you are talking about completely new site, it can take much longer than that.

    ps: Hello Irene :D

I submitted my first ever website to Google on 8th October and by the 17th October I was starting to get traffic from Google search queries.

At that time the website had only about 5 backlinks (not much more now to be honest) and no site map.

The only thing I can think of that might have helped was my website has a lot of content on it.

Anything you post on DP will be indexed quickly. I think I seen that the url has over a million backlinks with all the tools and activity.
I did a few test a while back and seen that google would index my site is less then 10 mins.
There are a lot of factors into this, but just build back links and your site will be indexed fast too.

If it's a wordpress powered blog, then it'll get indexed quickly - or a site with a ton of backlinks + DMOZ listing + authoritive site.

i think it really depends on the backlinks and how powerful your site is mate...
the more backlinks you have...spiders will chase it down and index your site/new pages...
