I have WP blog with total 5000 posts. Last moth google index 2500 links. Since then each day, google is ' 'trowing' the links. Last week index pages were reduced to 1200. This week it is only 563. I would like to know why..is google penalizing the site for anything...? Thanks in advance...
I saw the pretty much same for the past few weeks happening. The amount of indexed pages in webmaster tools declined to less than 400 out of 2600 submitted urls. at one point it showed ZERO and the same day it updated and now it shows 1798. Still not as many as I would like to see but quite a few more than what it has shown for the past few weeks. So I assume Google is doing some updating again and before long you might see more pages indexed again too. Cheers verdecove
same thing is happening to me, index pages down to 39 from 100+ and link count reduced....it will go back up, it happens from time to time, dont ask me why lol
Sometimes the indexed caches of the pages could still be on the Google databases but not displayed once you use the Site: command. Usually the older pages would get stabled after some time and so, try remaining patient for a while.
I think Google just tries to list important pages in websites, thus if they have incoming links and are updated frequently. If they are just static pages that sit there they were most likely removed because they are not in Google's best interests.
From my experience google doesn't "throw" away ono relevant/static pages, but he does so for duplicate on site content, here is what I mean: At first when google is indexing a blog it indexes everything: posts, categories, tags and more. Since you can access the same content with different urls in the blog, there are lots of duplicates in the indexing. Since googles knows the structure of a blog it will not penalize but will at some point reduce the number of indexed pages. But, this index reduction thing will not effect your ranking... the removed pages weren't ranked in the first place.
Don't worry about this stuff, its google's regular practice. Start worrying if you face sudden drop in google traffic.
