Is there a chance you had duplicated content on 40k of the pages? That could cause it. No other ideas..

Yea its called "different data centers" (i would assume as i dont work for them)

Basically its showing you info from an old data center weeks/months ago that just got turned back on
or runs super slow or whatever the reason for its slow rate of indexing.

Ive noticed the same happens with our sites...

    thx

google does that all the time, atleast for me, 1.8 mil pages indexed about 4 days ago, down to 1.4 mil, nothing new though as its up and down all year round, i also keep an eye on competitor sites and ive seen them go from 10 million to 2 million and back to 10 million though not all at one time. its nor really a data centers issue or duplicate content just that it seems thats the way google works.

It often happens to me to have 500k pages indexed, hit refresh -> 482k pages, hit refresh again -> 512k pages....etc
I think it's the big update.
The thing that bothers me is that this update lasts for tooooo long.
