I’m developing a site that will allow visitors to post their own images. But I would like titles and alt tags of these images SEO friendly, specifically Google Images search friendly. I need the interface to be very simple. My idea would be to offer categories for visitors to choose from while uploading the images, that way the title at least would have the appropriate tag. Any suggestions? I’ve checked out Gallery2 and Coppermine but want something a bit more up to date as far as layout and navigation.
You can make the script by customizing it seo friendly. You have to allow users to add image name and tag which should be placed under image alt. You can submit each link to digg like sites which help you in better ranking.

I was looking into joomla and was wondering if anyone has had experience with an image gallery on that format? I know there are some pretty powerful SEO features available i.e. tag cloud, etc...

Yes beacon.seo deviant art does have a good image, the gallery they use is cool and i noticed that links to their galleries are sub-domains.... must be great for SEO.
