Page rank does not depend only on submitting the website to google. If your site is linked to other sites with a good page ranking then there is a possibility that you are also ranked better. Google look for 2 things - How many people are visiting your site and how many sites have a link to ur website. I would suggest you try and place your website link on various blogs and website with better ranking if possible.

I have a quick question for you. I just commented on a blog and I know that when people click on my name it goes through to my site, does this count as having link on their site? Or does the actual link have to be somewhere on the site???

if you want ranking, you need to think about backlinks, try writing a few articles and linking them back to your site, or better yet press releases.

How should I go about creating a large amount of backlinks. I'd rather not do anything automated because I like to know what I'm getting.....

You should build some High quality backlinks from high PR authority sites. Google loves these links and you will be well on your way to getting a PR on your site. Remember Google only updates PR once every 3 months or so, Knowone knows exactly when Google does this but thats a rough timescale, I think next update may be soon if it's not been already.

If you can't build these sort of links yourself or don't have the time you can hire someone to do it for you, I am starting my own service very soon doing exactly this so feel free to PM me if you want some details.

If you've got no PageRank it could be either that it's a new site so is probably showing grey in the bar as Google has not updated it yet or that it is zero because you have no or little backlinks coming to it. Just work on your backlinks like others have suggested and the next time the PR update is done you should be at least a 1 if you've worked hard. But I agree, don't worry too much about PR as you should be concerned more about ranking for your keywords of choice. However for both you will need to build quality backlinks.

I build back links steadily, and still there is update, stuck at zero. While for my other free blog, there has never been link building and post updates at all since months ago (no incoming links as well), but the PR keeps steady at 2! I dun understand what Google is doing.

Its based all on traffic and ranking. Directories are not as good as they use to be anymore, Google kinda kaboshed that a while ago.

That said, it still counts on the traffic you bring in. So directories works somewhat if they generate traffic.
Traffic services work, but you need to keep a daily upkeep of at least 3-5k a day of unique visitors, and re occurring traffic.
Getting linked on websites with good PR helps also, buy banners or link exchanges

Also, page rank updates are every 3 months or so, so its a long process
