This was being discussed in another thread. Not sure if it was at DP or not, as I could not find it.

Seems to be some kind of bug and the people who were experiencing it at the time said that the database reverted back to the normal state in a few hours (perhaps next time your site is crawled).

So, hopefully you guys will see normal results soon!

Google has been doing strange things latley. Some of my pages were gone from cache and weren't showing up in searches. Luckily it only lasted for about 24 hours though.

True. Most of the recent issues have been related to the cache. I think they might be using a separate database to display cache and a separate one for the rankings.

These are issues that they must be facing due to the huge size of their database and millions (or is it billions?) of searches each month. They had separate servers for different locations, but I think the've long outgrown that as well and might be experimenting with multiple servers for each geographic location with each server (or multiple servers) being used for each specific task.

Either way, the problem should be rectified within a few hours. It is quite annoying though.

there are claims that Google has "lost" half of it's index and also taken down their own sites which are cloak like to show they're not playing.
It seems like playing around but I think they are just testing how much additional content to the home page the other pages really provide.
