Google has just filed a patent for in-game advertising. i don't know about having ads in video games. http://www.marketingvox.com/archives/2007/04/02/google-files-in-game-ad-targeting-patent/
No ads in games? There are ads in all the games aleready. For most racing games the car companies pay to have thier cars in the game and pay to have them have different performance. And all the billboard around the track? Ads. In golf games (Tiger Woods Golf) all the golf equipment companies pay to have their equipment in the game (Nike, Addidas, etc.). In football games all the ads in the stadiums are paid for as well. There is already a big industry there. Google seems a bit late on this one.
That's pretty interesting, could be a great platform for delivering ads, could also be very annoying for the gamers depending on how the ads are actually delivered. In game advertising is nothing new but dynamic ads in games is as far as im aware a new concept, maybe they will have billboards within games such as fps that change depending on the users country and other specifics as you run down the street blasting the living crap out of your opponents.
oh ads are just going to ruin the game no one likes to watch ads at the start of the movie unless its a interesting ad. I can now see pirates making patched versions without the ads
Patching is possible, but if this would be in some kind of product placement, why not? If this would affect game prices... Now I don't see anything wrong with these ads. We will see how it works.
who, when playing a video game is gonna remember or care that they just saw a coke advertisement? i dont see the point? I thought I actually read a story a few weeks back that said video game ads were a dismal failure. No one paid attention or even remembered any of the spots.
Anarchy Online has in-game ads for people with the free accounts, they've been doing it for over a year now. The ads look terrible, basically huge billboard ads on the sides of buildings. Looks really distorted and nasty. Interesting idea, but I don't see it being very useful to most advertisers.
Battlefield2142 has been working on getting dynamic ads for its multiplayer version. What a bunch-o-crap.
Good point! If the ads will somehow make the games cheaper for us consumers, then it's ok - as long as it doesn't affect the gaming experience.
