I want to start a new group as an aid to market my site. Which is the best, Google or Yahoo? Which would bring more new members?
I would chose yahoo. I don't know about Google traffic. Thats just my preference. You would have to build your own traffic up with both. But I could be wrong.
I've used YahooGroups for years. Unfortunately I'm not that impressed with its functionality. I had an eGroups account which was bought out by Yahoo (thus becoming YahooGroups) and I think it was better 7 years ago then it is now. But... it still works well enough if you're not comparing it to anything. Maybe *I* should check out Google Groups.
Google Groups, originally "Deja News" is simply an interface into Usenet - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usenet Google is now adding a Yahoo Groups type functionality to Google Groups which is interesting - ie do the new google groups actually incorporate into Usenet? Basically put, Yahoo Groups is more mature and established and would have many more members than Google groups does. Google currently had the Google brand going for it but as Google Answers showed, that can mean nothing much. Google has not been advertising the Google Groups as a new means to create groups just like Yahoo so again, I question their commitment. Google currently is spreading out so much that they seem to just have multiple projects going and assuming that they will all suceed. Just a thought.
I do think there are more people aware of yahoo-groups then aware of google groups. But if I were starting groups now, I'd look into forums generally. Yahoo groups is almost as much past its prime as google groups is. I do still use yahoo groups for my newsletter - and am happy about that.
I Prefer google... it sucks less than Google Adsense I've used yahoo for a long time and I'm pretty happy about it.. google isn't that good with groups... Greetz
