Has anybody checked out, or have any information about, the new Google Groups?

Just looks like an upgrade to me. Lets you have subscriptions to specific groups for example.

Doing Oracle and SQL-Server DBA Windows and web app development, I find Google Groups essential. I remember back when it was DejaNews.

Any increase in functionality or tool sets can only help me significantly.

Can a link from the Google Groups have the same impact as any link, or is it dodgy ground and could it affect your serps?

True but you could still get traffic from a post you placed there or end up in the "Groups" search results. Those results however can't really be optimized.
