Google going the wrong way ?

I think google is heading in the wrong direction with their search algorithms. Its got to a point of where relevant search is decided by how much a web master is willing to spend or use his contacts to build as many backlinks as possible. I have a site, which is updated every day with lots of content, however, building backlinks is harder due to expenses and competitors hating. However, I have seen sites beating me on my own keywords! and they only have one stupid page with the keyword whilst my site has 5543 pages! with lots of content and almost every page is about that market. Google is really messing up, its about time they change their system. Its becoming a game of who can spend the most to get higher results or who has better contacts. The whole bit of content is king is now becoming a joke!. On microsofts new Live.com search, I get number one spot! on the keyword.. but on google.. i cant even see my site on the first 10 pages!. Sites that have been on the net longer than mine beat me, and some of them have not been updated since 2003.

Google has made the barrier of entry a bit more real like in a real business which for their purposes is not such a bad thing since it great to combat short-term spam but not great for fresh and interesting results sometimes.

That is how google has been ranking websites over the past decade or so and that is their technology, the way they score websites is based on backlinks and IMO is one of the better methods to rank webpages. and getting ranked in search engine is what created the whole SEO industry. When you mention that its all about people spending to buy backlinks, then again, if it was the other way around where google would rank your pages based on contents then those same people would spend money adding more contents (of which are probably useless ), then again.. you will say.. "those guys with money are out ranking me because ....." .. for however the search engines work, those people will still outrank you, the only way you can outrank them is actually provide content good enough that people would link back to you...

if you have good content... how many people will link to you? unlimited
if you have crap content and are paying for the links, how many links can you get? and how long will those links last?
--- so in the end.. real (good) content will win

I dont think anyone here (or anywhere actually ) is in a position to tell google how they should structure their algo.. they're running a multi-billion dollar company and just because your not ranking well in their search result.. they're algor sucks.. :p

yeah, is that where you guys get your links?

I don't know if I just suck at making websites, but I have been doing this for years and I have never had that many people link to my sites

sure I have gotten some links but never even a noticable fraction of what the site needed to rank

I have several websites, and never spent a penny advertising..

one of them is receiving 8000+ visits daily.. and never spent a penny since day 1 for back links, people just link to it because it's useful for them.

also, its not only content and backlink that ranks you in SE, its also about how you present those contents (+ 1001 other possibilities). Your use of keywords, headings, titles and how you code those HTML pages (HTML tables vs CSS) etc.. plays a BIG BIG role in SE ranking.

eg. if you put your headings on graphical images VS in <h1> tags, then the <h1> tags will outrank images easily...

If your content is as good as you say it is you should have no problem getting backlinks.

If people directly links to an article page that they found to be useful, They will post a direct url or have a text useful for the readers, but they wont use keyphrase in the anchor text which is useful for ranking.,

is the website that is receiveing the 8000 vistors a day , the first of its kind?

I have often found people who have old sites that were put online before there was much competition have a different out look on website marketing.

if they are linking to it from their site, chances are their site is related to your topic, which is a positive return.

ferret: really? I have found those things make very little difference

that was really my comment regarding the overall presentation of the page....which plays the big role..

with that said.. if you cut away your tables and start using CSS, you will might get better rankings because the site will load faster, less code/tags.

it was not a first of it's kind, though there were very few back when i started it in 2002, but the traffic increased from around 2000 daily to 8000 daily within the last year only, which is the only time I really put effort into the site. Don't just whip up a site and expect traffic to grow.. if you don't put effort into the site..chance of succeeding is very slim. just sit back and look at your site.. would YOU want to visit your site if it wasnt yours? if no.. then why would others?

Yes you are right, It will surely help in increased bot crawl, weightage to that page, but it wont improve your ranking for a particular phrase which is not used to link to your page

It may or it may not, depending how the user linked it to your site, whether the link is anchored or the texts surrounding the link are relevant or not, gives some point to your keyphrase.

    for example:

If you want web hosting click here - this may help

free myspace graphics and stuffs like that. click here (where click here links to a web hosting site, will not give much weight to the keyphrase)
