November 9, 2005 17:16 EST -- Google Inc., targeting the online auction market dominated by EBay Inc., is seeking to patent a system that creates Internet ads automatically and makes it easier for people to sell products on the Web.

"It's crystal clear Google is planning for an all-out move into classified advertising," said Peter M. Zollman, founding principal of Classified Intelligence. "These patent filings and the disclosure of Google Base a few weeks ago show the company is actively preparing to offer free listings for cars, homes, jobs and 'stuff,' even for merchants, among its services."

I think this was inevitable. First, a rival for PayPal. Then the rest of the store.

Also, with ebay being one of its biggest advertiser for Adwords, Google knows which keywords give what volume to ebay.

Google is genius. It sounds like they will create an auction that publishers can run like Adsense. That will be a serious blow to ebay.

I have nothing against Google (and mayb I'm even a bit of a Google whore) but Google is getting way too big for its boots. I'd say max 10 years before a collapse :p

We'll see how it works out, I don't think it's going to kill ebay though.

I don't think it will kill eBay either. But it will give them some competition. That's never a bad thing... :)

Well, the problem is that ebay is already established... when google released GIM it didn't come anywhere close to killing AIM or MSN. In fact, I stopped using it because only one or two of my friends would ever log on. *shrug*

Gtalk is still new and still in beta. I agree that MSN and AIM have a formidable lead in that arena and I wouldn't bet on Google catching them - unless they do a better job of integrating VoIP - they're reportedly using the Skype engine. If they can do that, they might start to develop a user base. And if they add compatibility with AIM and MSN, they might have a real chance.

I wouldn't bet on it but I wouldn't bet against them either. And the eBay venture is different - that doesn't have a user base issue - people will buy (and sell) where they get the best deals.

I like the idea that Google is taking over. I'm tired of eBay pushing its weight around especially with their fees. It's time to guzzle up on some Google.
