yeah, that threw me off too.

it makes sense when you're talking about msn's & yahoo's results not being relevant when google's are, but apart from that it really doesn't make much sense at all.

Yea...G favors wikipedia primarily for content & inbound links, not because it's wikipedia. Yahoo and MSN should be ranking wikipedia higher...maybe one day people will use wikipedia to find info instead of using google.

A little over a year ago wikipedia added nofollow tags to outbound links...that was a sad day, lol

indeed wikipedia killed the practice of using nofollow links...
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Nofollow

awesome...at this point it's silly to think wikipedia could be bleeding PR by linking to other sites.

I don't agree with the bias towards wikipedia, something like encyclopedia britannica i could understand, but steven colbart proved how dodgy wikipedia can be.

Who use Britannica? English-speakers? Wiki is developed by thousands of people all around the world in their own laguages. That's the one reason. And the second one: do you think that google search engine, or words analyzers (or whatever it does) can extract meaning or correctness of Wiki's descriptions? I think all the Wiki's database is enough to attract google bots and people too.

i had a link to one of my sites on wikepida for 2 days, but during that 2 days it got crawled so i have a backlink showing for this site. The site is not anywhere near the top of the serps. The wikiedpia page is 3rd for the keyword tho.

one link, regardless of where it's coming from, likely won't ever be able to get you ranking for even moderately competitive terms.

it's a quality link, but you still need to go against sites that have hundreds or thousands or hundreds of thousands of quality links.

it's a start. no one claimed it's everything you need.

yeah, I understand your view there, but to me the good thing about wiki, is also the bad thing, and that is that anyone, including people with little knowledge on a subject can edit it.

wikipedia is spammed to death as it is, Its too easy to setup a script to sit on your server and keep adding your links as soon as they are deleted

Yes, its a good link if it's not link farm. Because Google devalued pages with lots of outgoing links on it.

But you should also add a script of changing your IP because you will be banned if you continue adding spammed links on wikipedia.

i dont understand why people spam an information source like Wiki ? If you really want your presence felt why not contribute some good content and then add your link that works as a relevant resource ??

I'm only trying to answer to the question: why is Wiki ranked so high in G. I do not evaulate the content. I claim that even people with little knowledge can make full protein food for google robots (text with keywords). Because robot don't understand meaning of descriptions. That's all.

I've got several links on comic-related wikipedia pages.

One piece of advice: don't bother trying to get links on geek-heavy pages like the entries for Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica; you'll get bumped off within an hour or two.
