It's not just a case of how good Google is, there is just a distinct lack of competition with even a fraction of the search volumes. Can't see that changing any time soon.

Quite interesting how Yahoo hasnt been mentioned much in this topic. Isnt that the biggest competition? Position 1 and 2 on Alexa.

There could be a possibility that some new search engine might attract some Google users but on the other side, Google is not getting weaker. Rather, they are expanding and they are expanding intelligently. Remember their recent acquisitions? Google has men and money to keep it ahead of others. I do believe nothing is impossible BUT it's really very difficult to outshine Google.

Google will one day begin to become bland and no longer the wonder child. Most all successful businesses rise to a peak and then settle into mediocrity after $100,000,000,000.00s have been made.

    Think

    Microsoft
    Oracle
    Intel
    ADP
    Netscape
    ODP (DMOZ)
    Yahoo
    CDNow
    Dell

All rode to the top and then slowly settled to just being around...

Give it five years and Google will no longer be #1.

They will become the next Microsoft, always being in the top 3, although the only real way for Google to change is if they fix the search engine and focus on that nearly 100%.

Are you trying to create a buzz word for yourself? All things you said is "your own opinion" and not even a "fact". How could those ones "searchme.com" and "cuil.com" could win over Google if they are trying to be like Google? If Yahoo and MSN couldn't win then why them?

80-90% of internet users are not web marketer and the only name they know are "Google" "Yahoo" "MSN" "Live" and yeah "Ask" and that's all. There are many copycat out there and most of them are not succeed, example "7search.com". If they really want to win over Google, they have to act themselves differentiate than what Google does before.

A little history - Yahoo win over Altavista because of their human powers, Google win over Yahoo because of their accurate results and "no advertising oriented" like Yahoo, plus an advantage from their bots instead of human powers by Yahoo.

Sorry your just totally wrong. Google is dominating the search market, crap like searchme and cuil shouldn't even be considered competition.

I disagreee. Google has the general market, whereas the other SEs you mention are unknown (by comparison) by the general user.

You don't hear the average person say "just Yahoo it" or "just Cuil it"
    It's always "just Google it"

The day I would accept that Google's reign is over, is when they send less traffic to me than another SE. Right now, Google still beat the rest hands down. And who said we need to focus only on a particular SE? If you rank well for Google, it's likely you rank well for others like Cuil.

I think that [IMG] is wrong, Google era is far from over, if google era ends some day, it won't be anytime soon.

So you can go ahead and optimize your site for cuil [IMG]

I think you know what you're saying or at least you have valid grounds for your claim. Google is becoming even more powerful. ;)
