Google is developing software that will enable their users to compute on network computers using the Google server farm as their CPU. The average computer user 5 years from now will not need local file storage with the innovations taking place today. http://www.nytimes.com/2004/10/18/technology/18search.html?ex=1184472000&en=5fd9d80e03cf283a&ei=5035&partner=MARKETWATCH Google is pushing this innovation, I say that is good, I may not be all that happy about all the information collecting, but that seems to be the price users will have to pay to use Google computing products. I am so mad at M$ for the security problems with their OS and IE that I will support anything other than M$. Apple, Google, Linux, IBM data centers, ANYTHING but Softie.
the information collection and perceived lack of privacy is what will keep this idea from working. I know I wouldnt store private documents on someone elses server.
It won't be long until we search dna.google.com for a matching partner where you can specify all sorts of demands with the advanced search. Eventually they'll know every little detail about us.
This trend is simply the data center model that IBM, HP, Google and a lot of others are working on. http://blog.topix.net/archives/000016.html Data centers will be the CPU and mobile computing will take off with broadband everywhere. Folks will not need to be stuck at home to compute.
But what if Satan(The Prince of Darkness) started a software company? Oh wait... never mind. -- Derek
Anothony - So does that mean you have finally come to the conclusion that Google is not running their business based solely on their "spyware toolbar", they will still be around when MSN releases their search engine, they aren't going to be driven out of business by spyware laws, their stock isn't going to trade at $1/share anytime soon and and they generally aren't satan? If so, that's quite a turn-around for you, eh?
The facts are this, I think Google and IBM will one day be one company, that is the killer app. Larry Ellison and Sun had the idea of network computing 10 years ago and it did not fly at that time, this time it is going to fly right in M$ face. IBM and Google share the same research facility at Stanford and I think that both are aiming for M$. IBM is building massive data centers for major corporations to serve websites and to provide on demand computing, Google is doing the same for retail customers. Synergy man, that is what I see.
Spyware laws and laws against cookies are moving through congress right now Shawn. Google happens to have some of the best internet lawyers working for them and will alter their programs to suit any new laws. They will get away with what is allowable by law (they had to comply with California laws on G-mail). So we do not know what laws will be enacted. We also do not know what M$ will do but they are now on their so-called anti-virus and anti-spyware kick as I mentioned they would start marketing into if you recall. As far as Satan running the company, have they hired Dick Cheney yet?
No Satan (Oh sorry Anthony) is still running uh, XP SP2 but bet your ARSE that this is my last M$ box, my next computer will be a PowerBook G4 or whatever they call it when I have enough money to buy one. Until then Satan (Anthony) will be using the Patch of a Patch of a Patch M$ Active X spyware collector machine. One great thing about these M$ boxes, you always get to look at the latest spyware programs floating around the internet when you scan them with SpyBot and Adaware. These M$ boxes are Adware and Spyware magnets, cool as hell to see all the Drive by downloads and browser highjacks. Never learned more about hacking in my life until I started computing with M$
Whats Microsoft Windows desktop share these days? Is it around 90% of all desktops run Windows? This is one of the main reasons it is so targetted by hackers and spyware companies. Fact is, Linux or Mac would be in the same boat if they held a 90% desktop share.
What does their share matter if the OS is defective to the core? Microsoft has done a great job of marketing and knocking down the competition, but the competition is knocking on their door. So is Grid computing (Network computing) that is internet based.
I'm not saying Microsoft software is perfect. However, with its massive audience it's a likely event that more security holes will be found, based simply on chance. Linux has had more flaws than you think. Just look at Apache, PHP, continually releasing minor updates to cover up bugs and flaws. Microsoft rarely updates IIS, and ASP.NET etc. How often do we have to download updates to the Windows OS core? Also... I think you should consider how much Microsoft mean to companies like Google and IBM. The majority of Google users are running Microsoft Windows (circa 90%?) and IBM have a lucrative deal to supply the CPU of the new XBox. Both create massive revenue streams for both IBM and Google. I'm sure somewhere along the line you also benefit from Microsoft.
Yeah just like nearly 50% of windows users do that have a defective OS and browser unless they pay the blackmail fee to update to XP. It is a great way to raise cash for the "Kingdom of Greed" while they are in between OS product cycles. Should I feel sorry for GWB and the Saudi's also since oil is at records high prices? Oh the poor bastards. Can we all cry for the rich bastards today?
Dude... its a business, their aim -- market capital and sales, get over it. Could you please find me another person on this planet that has given as much money to charity as Bill Gates has?
I have to agree with XML... the sheer size of Micro$oft makes it so "lucrative" to target (by hackers n all)
So should we make him "Saint Bill", maybe we should throw "Saint Bill" day because he gives money to foundations instead of paying it to Uncle Sam. If he is so good why is he leaving 50% of windows users without a safe browser? Why are they forcing folks to upgrade to XP Special Patch 2? Could it be that they need the money since they give so much away. Really you do not know the story or you would not be defending Microsoft.
