Google Ends Advertising Deal with Yahoo

Google has ended its advertising agreement with Yahoo that gave Yahoo the ability to use Google to provide ads on its Web sites--and those of its publisher partners-- sites) in the U.S. and Canada.

“We realized that any cooperation between us would attract attention.” said David Drummond, Google chief legal officer, in a statement. “However, after four months of review, including discussions of various possible changes to the agreement, it's clear that government regulators and some advertisers continue to have concerns about the agreement. Pressing ahead risked not only a protracted legal battle but also damage to relationships with valued partners. That wouldn't have been in the long-term interests of Google or our users, so we have decided to end the agreement.”

In June, the two firms struck this deal whereby the world’s most popular search engines would sell keyword-triggered ads next to some of Yahoo’s search results.

Under the agreement, Yahoo was slated to run ads supplied by Google's AdSense for Search and AdSense for Content services next to Yahoo's internally generated paid search and algorithmic search results, the company said. Yahoo can also run Google-supplied ads on non-search Yahoo Web properties, as well as on those of its partners.

    Don't think it'll really matter.

I think it definitely matters. This opens up the door for Microsoft to try yet again to purchase Yahoo or at least Yahoo search. I think the only reason that Google was interested in a Yahoo deal in the first place was to prevent MicroSoft from buying Yahoo. A Yahoo/MicroSoft deal may be the only thing that could threaten Google's dominance.

I'd like Microsoft to buy Yahoo and put some dent on Google's dominance. I seriously want a descent alternative to Adsense!

I totall agree with this. It's one of the smart tricks played by google. Google's Legal department already know they'll have problems with this combination, but it's doing whatever it can to block msft/yhoo combination.

Jerry young finally realized he has been played, and went to msft like a crying kid hugging his mom, but mom said.. no son, you are too arrangant for my taste. except, msft is only a step mom. :)

Lets wait and see what Microsoft will offer now for the deal. Will it stick for the previous amount or decrease it considering Financial Crisis
