The point here is that if Google would have the moral standards they are prevtending to have they woudln't do any business at all in China, and woudln't obey to their censorship. Nobody is forcing them. Well, except "the market" maybe, and that's of course the true reason here, they should stop with total hypocritical justifications like "We ultimately made a difficult decision, but we felt that by participating there, and making our services more available, even if not to the 100 percent that we ideally would like, it will be better for Chinese Web users, because ultimately they would get more information, though not quite all of it.". Bullshit! This is just about money, and nothing else, Google should stop being so patheticly hypocritical!

I don't know, this thread is about Google being evil, when they are standing up against it, you decide, everyone associated with Bush is under investigation right now so you tell us!

Yeah and if Bush was an honest guy we would not be paying record prices for oil or at war today!

China is run by strongmen just like we are, get the oil prices down and end the war instead of thinking about Google man!

Well, this is a discussion forum, and this discussion is about Google doing Business in China, which I stated my opnion on. This is the whole purpose of a discussion forum. There are always "worser things", but this completely irrelevant here.

If there would be a discussion on the Bush administration starting random imperialist wars for oil and political influence all around the world to kill random inoccent people, after lying to it's own people about the reasons of the war, who are stupid enough to happily re-elect him afterwards, than I would have raised my opnion on that as well...;)

Interesting, hadn't seen that yet. I still think Google made the right choice in entering the Chinese market. It's a tough decision, no doubt. But if you want to do business in China, you have to play by their current government's rules. It's unfortunate, but true for now.

The question that still bothers me, is this: What would happen if the Chinese government asked Google/MSN/Yahoo to help them track down people who are publishing anti-government information?

Would that still fall under the category of "doing what you have to do, to do business in China"? No. I think and really hope no companies would consider agreeing to such demands.

Well this is about Google being wrong, they are not wrong, there are no morals in business just like there is none in our government!

We are on topic here discussing Bush because he is now trying to get search records out of Google at this time, in addition we never elected him, he stole two elections!

In that case all of those lovely US companies that have their products made in China should also stop doing business with them. Let's face it the people there work for peanuts without any labour legislation (basically as slaves). Do you think that's stopping the US companies? Definitely not.

Why should they do that? At least for google I'm sure that they would never do it.
They would have to to intimitate hosts.

Yahoo and Msn are providing hosting as well, therefor I'm not sure if they wouldn't do it, who knows - perhaps ...

I think the Chinese Government is already gathering information on search queries from Google.cn, and if they're not already, they will demand in future. Do you think the communist Chinese Government will allow its people complete freedom when searching the internet? Hell no.

But this probably won't be reported, as we all know how Google likes to keep things like this secret (like the way that Google doesn't like people knowing how it stores every search query from every IP, it just doesn't speak about it).

Google's desire to protect their worldwide market share in the search engine business is not "evil", all search engines must play on the same field.....

Should Google just drop out of the fastest growing market in the world and put a closed sign up in Mountainview

Governments change, China is regarded as a better government by the Citizens of the world and looked upon more favorably than the United States, maybe we can hope that our government changes here too!

    http://www.radicalruss.net/blog/2005/06/americas-image-worse-than-china.php

At least China is not asking Google to expose their users, they are just asking for some results to be removed and that is REALLY what Bush wants too, he is just going through the back door to try to get the same thing done!

You didn't read my last post? How do you know China isn't asking Google to exposed their users? Afterall, China asked Yahoo to expose their users and a guy was sent to prison for 10 years because of it.

    ok anthony...you win ;)

i think in this day and age ... we are going to find that being totally free from government peeping and at the same time being safe from dirty nukes going off in new york is going to be tough.
i maintain that if you aren't doing things you aren't supposed to be doing then you have nothing to fear. 7 years ago i'd have a different opinion.

    the simple days are gone.
