I heard many times here and other webmaster forums that people should limit outbound link to 10 to avoid being penalized by google. But take a look at this site http://www.drudgereport.com/ all content are outbound links.

You can't believe everything you read. The best thing you can do is question everything.

Drudgereport gets tons of inbound links for nothing.
And what you are referring to is the 'best practice' of keeping your outbound links to 10 on a single page... for maximum effect, PR-wise. Anything over 100 and it can affect the PR flow, since Google seems unable to cache more urls than that from a single page.

.gov and .edu are handled differently. And I am speaking of the cache of urls to be crawled, not the cache of pages crawled.

Fair enough. But how do you know all this? This looks like information only people inside google would know.

I would suggest to limit the outbound links on your page, unless the site you link to really provides value

I link out freely, as long as they are to quality sites, are relevant to my readers, and actually add some value.

It has been suggested that by providing highly relevant links to authority sites Google may begin to look at your site as a hub... and that's a good thing :)

Google says that they will follow 100 outbound links from a page. More than that, thay dont guarantee.

What trick are you talking about.

And, YES, Google use very advanced automated spam detection scripts and will kick you out easily if you dont take care.

Here is a more learned discussion about Google's "limits" -> http://forums.searchenginewatch.com/showthread.php?t=678

The "100 links" people talk about is in reference to Google's webmaster guidelines - not a technical limit.

However - they also talk about a 101K HTML limit - that sounds more interesting. So, it sounds like Google only reads the first 101K of a web page.

This discussion is from 2004 - so I am sure a lot has changed - most likely limits going up - not down.

well i dont believe that google has any restrictions, and well people talking about limiting the outbount links to 10,

all that i can say is that i have seen PR8 pages with more that 70-80 outbound links and yet theire PR has not diluted.

Quality of the outbound links could be an issue

This recent trial showed that Google can crawl 520Kb of page text.

Excellent - thanks for the pointer. Interesting to note that Yahoo (as per the article) is in the 200K range and MSN is over 1MB - wow.

The experiment they did was very well run. You could potentially do the same with links to find out what the "max" links recognized by engines, but I have a feeling (throwing caution into the wind here) that they will follow all the links on a page (if the links falls within the amount of text that a bot will read on a page).

Its a theory, forget about it, its not working like that.
You dont loose PR by linking to other sites, you only give them PR.
