I have been commenting on dofollow blogs, using signatures in forums and getting one way backlinks from other websites, yet google does not consider them as such. I just want to know what's wrong and how to correct it

    Thanks

Reflection of your backlinks in link:domain operator may take some time.

    Hi there,

You do not worry about that some time google takes time to read back links & some time it read in just 1 hour.
but check your links in google webmaster so you can get more clear idea about that.
if you have any more questions ask me.

You need to register in Webmaster tools to see what your backlinks are - and that often lags behind by several weeks. As policy, google only shows a small sample of the backlinks it's aware of with any kind of search operator. Yahoo is much more generous, and even though it's a different search engine with a slightly different algo, it's close enough to give you an indication of whether where you are placing links is 'crawlable'

It's true. It takes a few weeks until all your backlins are updated, especially if you are a blogger and use the "blogroll". Still, since Google Webmaster Tools doesn't give you an entire report of your backlinks, I recommend you Xinureturns.com SEO Tool. I've been using it for a few years now and I'm really putting my trust into its stats.

if you use google webmaster tool account to check your google backlinks you should know that google only shows you a small fraction of your existing links. and as other posters said it is lagging behind. however your dofollow blog posts may have gone no follow in the meantime

it's also true that google is not very good with recognising your forum sigs and blog comments and you can't blame them as I think there's too much spam there.

Google does recognize them as links, they just don't tell you. Google Webmasters is a great tool, but it does not show all of your links. Doing a search for link:yoursite.com also doesn't tell you all of your links. Google, by the way also recognizes nofollow links...I have commented on blogs that are no follow with a link and then saw the link in Google Webmasters.

All the backlinks are not shown by any backlink checking tool so you need not worry about links not showing as backlinks, its just an error.

yeah they show no-follow links in there webmaster tool, but i dont think if that would be helpfull for seo, because the tool is just for letting you know about your backlinks not which one is follow or which one is not.

I think that Yahoo also shows the NoFollow links, in that case you should be careful when drawing conclusions for Google.
