Is Google Docs a good alternative to Microsoft Word? I'm thinking I may not buy office for my new computer which doesn't even come with MSWorks. Didn't most computers come with at least that?

Matter of opinion really. Google docs is just a stripped down version of microsoft word with a stripped down price ;)

Google docs is better if you want to just quickly store some text somewhere and edit from any terminal. Word is definitely better for publishing articles and has better options to "pretty-up" the document. It's also offers a lot more advanced features like labels and stuff.

Google Docs is handy when you don't have MS Office Installed on the computer.
But, for day to day use, I'd prefer MS Office.
