Google Desktop Search

When I first started using Desktop Search I was impressed and it got me thinking.

If it uses the same algorithms (cut down) as regular Google could it be used to compare SERPs with other pages. It obviously won't work with backlinks on new pages but could potentially be used for comparing local copies of your own and competitor pages.

Does anybody have any thoughts or experience with this.

    Cheers

Yeah, I've had a look at it, but it's hard to do it on a machine without all the junk.

It is a fairly good indicator though. :)

So can it be used as an instant indicator of on page optimisation?
What sort of tests have you done?

    Nothing too detailed.

All the usual stuff like H1's, bold copy, italic copy etc.

I don't really know how the tests translate to google results because links aren't taken into account.
Also, the Google Algo is constantly changing which kind of prevents you from really finding out anything special.

It's great to give a rough overview of how things might work, not too great at giving an exact representation of the results.
