I can see one of my site backlinks change from 4 to 1,180

Who cares? what is the point of all the excitment? it means NOTHING to SERPS or anything

 

Backlinks being updated is actually quite a big deal. First of all it only happens a handfull of times per year. Second of all, backlinks are probably the single most important factor in determining PageRank. PageRank is probably the single biggest factor in determining where your site ranks in the index for a serp. The higher the PR, the higher your site will appear in a search.

 

Sorry yahoo still sucks. I get less than 1% of all traffic on all of my sites from yahoo. I get more from MSN, but they suck too. google still provides by far the most traffic to me, therefore, I'm most concerned about my backlinks and PR on google.

Of course backlinks have significant value in deciding fortune for ranking in organic results. BUT its backlinks not backlinks shown by Google.

 

google is constantly updating your backlinks, you just can't see them with a link command.

And i would argue that tool bar PR is just as useless.

Googles PR ranking is determined by the backlinks officially recognized by Google. Not by all backlinks. Google filters out many, if not most backlinks based on various criteria.

Google just did a backlink update about 3 weeks ago. They're doing another one?

The odd thing about Google's backlinks is strange. If I log on to Google Webmaster Tools I have over 200 Google backlinks, and some are very relevant from homepages with high pagerank.

They only show 4 to the public but those 4 aren't listed in my webmaster tools. I had "0" listed until 3 weeks ago.

It seems that Google may be trying to privatize our backlinks. But with Yahoo still around, who cares?

No change for my sites on that DC - BTW what's with that Google logo on there? I know G does special logos for special events and holidays and such but what is that one for?

Glitches in backlink queries.

In fact, the d/c mentioned seems to NOT have that glitch for me.

Check your backlinks via http://oy-oy.eu/google/links/ and then open up the d/c's in new windows and click around a bit, you will see the reported number change.
