Google Content Analysis - Duplicate Titles and Metas

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by mam4q, Sep 9, 2008.

Since Google started to report certain issues with the content of site pages I've been spending time eradicating reported duplicate titles and metas - especially in larger ecommerce sites. Can anyone tell me if a site is likely to suffer in the SERPs if these issues are not addressed?
Or can I be selective and just ensure that the main landing pages all have unique titles and metas?

    Cheers

Personally I like to try to ensure every single page has a unique title and meta description. This makes every page a potential search engine landing page. It is a good idea to start with your more important pages, but I don't think you should necessarily ignore the lower traffic pages. You want to give the impression that your website has unique content throughout. If a whole bunch of pages have the same title, the search engines may choose to not index some of those pages. Then those pages wouldn't be able to help the pages it links to as much.

If you are doing this as part of seo service for a large ecommerce website, I would be tempted to just do just do the important pages myself. Then provide some basic training for their staff to do the rest.

I think dublicated meta tags don't affect your website much, i myself don't make attention at it, just pass it...

I'd clean them up and make sure every landing page on your site has unique titles and descriptions. If you have some overlap and Google sees them as duplicate it's possible that only one of the pages will be ranked in the SERPs.

Make you think Google is just messing with us...but I cleaned up mine and will likely continue to do so.

Having mastered the fine are of exceeding 5,000 G's suggestions, I can say it will not hurt or help you in the SERPs. But you should fix them so more of you pages will start ranking.

The issue of duplicate titles must be fixed if you want each page to rank in the SERPs. If your eCommerce site is not SEO friendly or able to modify each <title> and Description in the database, then start looking for a new vendor now. Without the customized titles, you will not do very good or sell anything.
