Not sure why most people think Google are untouchable.
"The bigger they are, the harder they fall"

All it takes is a few wrong ideas, or bad moves and they could come crashing down. yes they maybe the leaders in their field at the moment, but so was electrolux the leaders in the vacum industry, then bam out of nowhere some guy in a shed invented the dyson, and now most homes own one.

Dont get me wrong, they are doing a very good job at staying at the top, but who's their competition??
Microsoft msn - kinda like their second job, but cant or wont fully commit.
Yahoo - how long has their eqivalent to adsense been in beta now??

What goes up, must come down!

I dont think domain is an issue, what matters most to me, is the quality they bring to the people, not a garbage porn searches or similar, if they can deliver a qualitative stuff, then why not.

I read somewhere that they were starting an european competitor to Google. France, Germany and some other european countries were contributing to the project.
    Is this the site?

Google is losing market nowadays because is an American based company and pays in dollar, and as you may see the dollar is continuously decreasing, therefore not only me but many others people switched to European programs that pay in euro.
Many webmasters are thinking now of getting rid of adsense, and if google does not do anything they will lose soon .
This is why european countries are developing a competitor for google.

It is only the development domain they are using at present.
Google started out as google.stanford.edu for eg

The money is only for research, not for a server farm or marketing. Thats why I think they can do a lot with $165 million.

I prefer hakia.com. If we will say "Google Killer" to one search engine it will be Hakia.

Though Linux came from Europe, Linus Torvalds got nothing from the Finnish Government to implement it. And now he lives in the US... I don't think that implementing a better search engine than Google or the other big players in the search engine game will be tied to any country at all. If it was all about money, think about Bill Gates at Micro$oft and their new baby Live Search. Or all the money behind Google. I think that a few hundred million won't make much difference in search engine technology development. It's only my opinion though...

Well whatever happens, google need something to rock it's domination.. I love Google but its is NEVER good when their is such a dominating force in ANY field.. I think the fact that Google is getting into normal street ads and eye sensors etc etc is something of a worry.. a company can get too big for it's boots and I think everyone will benefit from a more level playing field
