Google.com vs Google.co.uk SERP Results: Why the difference?

Discussion in 'Google' started by ronmojohny, May 1, 2006.

I'm thinking about trying to get my sites to rank higher in the UK (maybe Canada, too) I see that they are listed, but the SERPS results are very different from the US.
What factors do you think are important in different countries?

    Thanks, RonMo

    server location mainly

a country TLD also seems to make a difference

but it is possible to do well in both Google.com and Google.co.uk SERPS.

I think the results are different, as it is the part of Google's algo.
I have heard that google displays country relevant sites in SERPS. That means if a querry is generated from UK, then most of the Sites will be from UK in SERPS and vice versa.
Correct me If I am Wrong..

Stupid if you ask me... I'm having my site hosted in the US because it's much cheaper (esp. with the current exchange rate), and I'm losing out in the UK serps. So a few of the top 10 in the Google UK serps are just portal sites which mention my site, and I'm on page 2
I hope those "new" datacenter serps will eventually propagate.

hehe I rank better in the .ca and .co.uk versions then I do in .com version by about 6 spots. I wonder why this happens?

The local SERPs are geo-targetted to favour regional listings.

This may have a factor but from my studies is got a lot to do with your links thus if your main power links are in the uk then it considers you more important in the uk

I posted about this updated last week

It's a combination of sever location, TLD and incoming links. Try to hit all three and you'll be strong in the local version you're looking to hit. It may be worth in some cases having diferent sites targeted towards differnet national markets.

I dunno, but some of my best links come from UK sites, and still don't rank well. Maybe it's because the links point to my old .com domain and Google doesn't recognise the 301 redirect for links from other sites. But I can't get those sites to change the listings because they're not maintained *sighs*.

Pretty much what everyone's been saying --

    1. The TLD - meaning have a .ca domain to rank better in Canada
    2. The hosting

You can also set geographic targeting, which might help with rankings, for domains and sub domains in your Google Webmaster account

They are generally the same, but I assume .co.uk sites could have a slight advantage.

.co.uk sites are automaticaly geo targeted - they get a better treat from Google on UK searches. And you will hardly get as amny visitors from other countries...

To get UK traffic just get a .co.uk, build a landing page with similar keywords, titles etc but different content pointing mainly to the .com. If your .com is high in the serps its quite easy to get the .co.uk the same. :)
