Hi Could I ask one of you guys a favour? I just had a reply back from a forum where I asked why they were showing my site as being unranked in the top 100 of Google.com whereas I was seeing it number 5 (and number 1 in .co.uk) The answer was that Google is using some geographical algorythm and I am not ranked 5 as it is showing to me. Can someone outside the UK search for swimming lessons in Google.com and tell me where swimwithus.co.uk ranks? If what they say is true then Google.com would show a differnt result for the USA, to the UK, and different again for India, for example?
You're not in the top 200 in the US. Google certainly does geotargeting - which can be based on where your server is located and domain extension. Since you have a uk domain, google will assume your content is for the uk, and thus give you a higher ranking for someone doing a search in the UK. What you are experiencing is common - especially for a site offering swimming lessons in the UK - not of much use for someone outside the UK.
Yes, the search rankings usually *are* different in different countries. If you use DP's keyword tracker you can adjust for which google.xx-version the ranking-results will be displayed. Use the options link at the rhs of the G! search window to adjust search options for different countries on your browser.
Thanks for that. How annoying - now not only do I have to think about google.co.uk and google.com but also geographical differences in google.com. <groan> What next.
You may see it as an advantage, too: it permits you to optimize your page differently for different regions...
Hello, You can use the parameter in google &gl=uk or &gl=us, etc etc, really I don't know what Algo is Google using, why? One of my sites is hosted in a dedicated server in US, this is a dot com website, but not all the pages rank in google.com, but yes in google.ca, google.XX. I'm not using Google Analityc, only Adsense, mybe this is the way that Google knows that I'm not from US.... Best, Jakomo
1) True, how about if a we register a domain as private? 2) True, but all the backlinks come from servers based in US. Best, Jakomo
