As i've seen this, I simply click on the shown Thumbnail and which i want to open then it simply opens in the new tab. I didn't get any difficulty.
Or you can simply click on the link given below the thumbnail. It is easily accessible.

Is there a plugin? I thought it just showed the most visited sites.

Handy tip: Bookmark the pages you want to see in that page. Then clear all browser cache. Then when you re open most of the time, the bookmarked sites will be shown on the page. If not then just visit all the bookmarked sites. It should stick even if you frequent other sites later

There is an add-on called fireshot. It basically does the job captures the website's window. I think you can come up with thumbnails with that. You can also see thumbnails in firefox if you have the google toolbar installed.
