I got an order yesterday using Google checkout in excess of $10,000. The customer used an email address that I am being told is invalid when I try to send a confirmation email to this customer. Is this a valid order or would this be a scammer trying to get over $10,000 of equipment for free? Also, what is the maximum amount that a customer can spend on Google Checkout?
Did the fraud checks pass, AVS, CVV? Also, where is the shipping address? Did they provide a phone number with their order? Lastly, do you ever get orders of this size, or is this an abnormal order? It initially sounds like fraud. If you cannot contact the buyer, I wouldn't ship anything. If you can, get a photocopy of their ID or drivers license. If the charge is for this much, there's no point risking losing the money and the merchandise.
The equipment I sell ranges from $1500 to $50,000 depending on if you are using it for personal use or commercial use. He bought 1 piece of equipment. There was a telephone number and address in California. All of the fraud checks passed but I have read horror stories of how people would get a chargeback from google and I don't want to chance losing the money and equipment and I know that this can happen, and has happened to me before while using paypal. Should I call the number and maybe ask for additional information regarding this purchase? This is the first sale from this particular site and my first transaction using google. All of my other sites typically only use Paypal as my payment processor but due to Paypal's transaction maximum, I signed up for Google checkout as well. Thanks.
I would definitely call the customer. Tell them the email address was not valid, and it is a large order and you are just verifying the buyer. If you can, fax/email them an invoice and have him sign it along with a photo-copy of his drivers license. It's such a large amount, that it's worth the extra hassle. If this is shippable by normal means, make sure you require a signature. Also, put the tracking numbers into google checkout when it ships.
