OK, I've read somewhere that google say they have no control over search results, and its all automatic, down to the pagerank, and any automatic process, so how do you explain "i'm feeling lucky" jokes? If you havent heard of these, its where you search for a term, click the "i'm feeling lucky button", and you get a funny results. The i'm feeling lucky button takes you stright to the top page of a search result (this is still true when doing the above) So, here are some examples: (Try these by entering the word, and hitting I.F.L button, then do it just by hitting the search button) Failure -- top result: www.whitehouse.gov/president/ Times the word "Failure" is used on page: 0 2nd result: ww w.failuremag.com - Times used on page: 12 -------------------- Liar -- top result: www.number-10.gov.uk/output/Page4.asp Times the word "Liar" is used on page: 0 2nd result: ww w.liar.be/ - Times used on page: 7 There are loads more of these i'm feeling lucky jokes, but i think these show what i mean -- the 2nd results are obviously deserve the top result! how can two pages that have nothing to do with the term rank higher? unless google can actually place results where they want? Maybe someone can give a explanation? Maybe i'm looking into it too much? But it just makes me wonder what results they put at the top without us knowing??? or if adsense sites really are put higher up results, or blogger results turn up more, etc, etc -- and did we really land on the moon? and do aliens really exist? Cheers
The whitehouse site lising no #1 for failure is because of a huge google bomb that went on for the keyword anchor text "failure". Which I presume is the same or the next result too.
It's obvious that this kind of jokes are injustice for the 2nd sites, but i must confess, these 2 examples are really funny
ah, the power of anchor text... So thats it? loads of people link to it with that anchor text? Thats great I've never heard of google bomb before lol
Yeah theres some good tricks for em. I agree though its lots of sites linking to them that brings em to the top.
It's harder to do now, though, I think. Also, I hear that they're making changes on the whitehouse.gov site to try to get the 'failure' one out of the SERPs. i think MArissa blogged about it recently (or a while back and I just stumbled on it) at some Google blog or another. -kpaul
Google wants you to read the legal notice: http://www.google.co.uk/intl/nl_ALL/legal_notice.html http://www.google.com/intl/nl_ALL/legal_notice.html http://www.google.be/intl/nl_ALL/legal_notice.html ..... and more legal notice in English PS: the legal notice might be changed some day ....but I do not know when
I believe it originated from lots and lots og blogs deciding that they would link to the white house with the word "failure"... I do not remember the details though.
Google Bombing originally came about when people got banned for having a massive amount of links appear over night and get banned so people used to 'bomb' there competitors and get them banned that quickly died, so it's just a phase people use when obtaining lots of links to another site now, hense the two in this thread Danny S was talking about this on webmasterradio, and said that AOL was the only one not to have Bush at the top for 'Failure' because they hand edit stuff lol
someone should come up with an experiment to show a googlebomb 1st hand ... hummm ... thats a great idea ... I think i might just do that ! LOL
While not really a Google-bombing experiment, it does show a successful Google-bombing... Google Bombs.......
