This is old news. It is was September 2005 when they changed the name because another UK claimed that they owned the trademark and hold rights to 'gmail'. Gmail is for every country except UK-based IP address's, which then becomes Google Mail. I dont know the exact legal issue here, but it appears that google didnt have much of a choise in the matter at the time. Rob

It's because gmail was already being used by a company in the UK. If you want @gmail.com just use a USA proxy and then register @gmail.com.
if you register in the uk your username, you can still receieve emails at , this is because the yourname becomes your google account, just like people in other countrys can recieve mail with googlemail.com
