Hey everyone, Just wanted to drop a note off to you that Caffeine (the new google algo) is now live in the world and is running across most of the Google datacenters. So look for your rankings to start dancing today. I noticed about 20% of the datacenters I watch going all over the place with my stable rankings. I'll be posting daily on my blog http:www.jimchristian.me with updates and ways you can see how the update is performing for your website. You can also leave questions and comments. Thanks
Aaron, Right now I'm seeing movement of about 3-7 spots for all of the domains I am watching. The real problem comes with the addition of the twitter feed up at the top. As more and more people are trying to be #1 on the Google the addition of a twitter bar only forces natural results down further. When I'm looking for a specific product the last thing I want to see is a twitter feed. For now it's a waiting game. I'm sure we will see more movement as the week goes on. So if your site looks like it is doing a nosedive I would wait until everything has settled down. Don't forget you can follow my updates on my site: http://www.jimchristian.me
Agree with you on the point that twitter feed might complicate a search for something specific on Google.
I hope it's better then what they've been using as of late. I'm tired of looking for three words and getting pages that only show one (or in some cases NONE) of them. I used to LOVE the big G, and I'm losing faith... So here is to HOPE (& caffeine).
Free BET, I think it's too early to tell. I've read in a couple places that older domains are carrying more weight and looking at some of the domains I control I'd say it's fairly accurate. The best thing to do is ride this out a little bit before we make assumptions. I just had someone over here at Go Daddy all crazy that they became #1 for a term. Only to then search again and find the result at #6. Remain stead-fast my friends. We'll get through this together.
I've been sniffing around the web, looking for strange results... I posted them on my site http://www.jimchristian.me. Some are attributed to the new update but my god, look at the results for some of these searches. It's almost like Google wants to force people to start looking at page two with the amount of space that's being taken up on the 1st page. Check it out!
http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2009/08/help-test-some-next-generation.html Was reading this I dont know but its causing me many results down and up. Its a mix results for me.
Thanks for the update. I've seen some older sites move up pn some terms that I track. Now is it a combo of old terms and/or old links? I need to look at that more closely.
@dbinto, I think there has always been weight applied to old links and old domain. My father has a website from 1996 and he has ooooooooollllldddddd links. I'm talking ancient. His website doesn't have any SEO and has remained unchanged for years. He's currently #2 for his main keyword and he only has about 50 links. The competitoin has hundreds of links. So all indicators point to age being highly relevant. I'll be watching his site along will all my other domains including Go Daddy. So keep your ears to the ground cause I'm gonna go for round two tomorrow and see how long this crazy train lasts.
yeah I agree.. was sitting at pos 3 for 2 high vol kw's and saw one drop back down 4 spots and another back onto the second page.. but again it's still early I agree.. however for another site of mine I saw it fall off the map "completely" after sitting on page 7 yesterday so it's really going to be interesting to see how this all pans out
I hate seeing the twitter links at the top. How are they relevant? I don't care if they are real time - it's not necessarily important to me! I think if they don't do away with those, they will lose some searchers...seriously, a lot of people aren't interested in twitter real-time results...and will find it too distracting.
We'll all see how this new algo will affect our sites. At the moment nothing much has changed, at least for me. Al.
I'm wondering why its taking so damn long to roll out. They've obviously started it so why isn't it finished yet? It must be deliberate but I don't know why. Surely they could just get all the datacenters running caffeine within one day - especially as they've been preparing for this so long. It makes no sense to spread the transition out over such a long time since it means all the world are seeing different things when they search.
