It has been my experience that the Firefox "website cannot be found" error glitch happens most frequently with php index pages. I get the most errors going to my own forums (always makes me think the server is down ) or to forums like here at DP. This is purely speculation but do you think that Firefox has a problem connecting to index.php versus index.html?
There is a fix for this, I believe it involves hacking the windows registry, so handle with care. I will try to find it.
I agree that it's probably Google getting ready for Longhorn, and probably a good business move. Can't let Microsoft take over that easily, after all.
SE can you do me a favour, I have an email document with the fix (i believe) but I cannot recreate the error. Can you copy and paste it here so I can search my email with Lookout to find it....
The Firefox team must be aware of this bug by now so why wouldn't they be offerring a patch to fix the glitch?
NewComputer - I just tried to replicate the error message - but now everything is connecting fine. I recall it being "website cannot be found" so a search for those words might find it.
Same with me... It happened earlier on though... When it happens, I'll copy it and paste it... Sorry, I didn't see your post when it happened.
You guys are getting way off the track, I thought we were talking about the Google browser? cut and pasted from another thread, but so valuable, it needed to be put here. Well here is the deal, when Google introduces a browser, if in fact they do, they will replace the toolbar with a Google browser. You will also have applications like the "so-called Puffin hard drive search tool" built into the Google browser. You will have Google search built into the browser, G-mail Built into the browser, Orkut built into the browser, Google news and blog search built into the browser. So what will you need M$ for when Google introduces the browser (Google OS)? The trade off in using Google OS will be that they will know more about you than "Jo Momma".
Here is the exact Firefox error message "google.com could not be found. Please check the name and try again." I also have had "document contains no data" errors same as SEbasic.
The Google OS (as I see it playing out) will be web-based applications -- search, gmail, froogle, blogger, etc. Throw in some Office-type apps and a Scheduler -- voila an online OS. I do not see "puffin" being part of it. They would be hard-pressed to get that to stick for any length of time. They will still go into feasibility testing of it, but with the advent of Longhorn it will become defunct. I do not see MS giving them the keys to the gate on any of their API code to keep it going. This is not to say that Google is not capable of pulling it off -- things do happen. People will still need the Win XP OS for this browser/web-app to work. Unless you are suggesting that Google is coming out with a full fledged OS that will run third-party apps like PhotoShop, FlashMX, DreamWeaver, etc. Not likely. And people are not going to give up Windows for it either. Look at Linux & Mac and their battle for desktop supremecy. The so-called Google Browser/OS will probably be exactly like the AOL browser is. Nothing more than that. It will have all the client-side programming necessary to operate the web-apps quickly, efficiently, and securely. In other words, the network of computers that Google owns (which could be the most powerful computer in the world now) is the mainframe -- our systems are just dumb-terminals.
Ronnie, if Google offers file storage on their servers, like they are offering with G-mail, what will you need windows for?
Oh, I dont know. I kind of like my PhotoShop. I like my Html-kit. I like my Spider Solotaire for a breather. I think I mentioned that already though. Unless Google has plans to replace all of this software (and yours too) with some of their own, I do not see Windows going away. Internet Explorer will be challenged and that will hurt enough -- for now.
Google could load any or all of those programs and offer them for a fee as an ASP vendor. They have software to build Blogger sites, they host those sites, you need nothing but access, correct?
